A binding in full straight grain morocco of the highest quality attributed to C(harles) Lewis on an ancient tipped-in slip from an old catalogue. With wide gilt raised bands, exceptionally fine and dense gilt tooling to the panels and neat gilt tooling framing the boards. Superb gilt doublures. With the splendid armorial bookplate of the great bibliophile Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, whose magnificent library was housed at Kensington Palace. One of only 50 large paper sets with the woodcuts, after Thurston, being in 2 states, one on india paper. Some minor foxing.

A splendid early Victorian full calf by Budden of Cambridge with gilt raised bands, twin labels and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. A simple gilt fillet frames the boards. With the armorial bookplate of J.F.D. Tutt. With a neat ink inscription on the first blank dated 1849. A magnificent set of Clarendon's great 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England', as it was originally titled on its publication between 1702 and 1704.

A magnificent Regency full straight grain morocco with the gilt title within a cartouche to the spine and the arms of the Earl of Leitrim (motto "Patris Virtutibus") to the boards. With frontispiece facsimile of an ALS from King George III. Slight rubbing to the head and tail of the spine but with no splitting or loss. This superb regency binding, presumably commissioned by Nathaniel Clements, 2nd Earl of Leitrim (1768-1858) houses a controversial series of letters between the King and his ministers.

The Sun King, Louis XIV, was king of France from 1643 until his death in 1715, the longest reign of any sovereign at 72 years and 110 days. Miss Julia Pardoe was an English poet, novelist, historian and traveller. Her most enduring works are her French histories which continued to be printed into the twentieth century.
