London: George Cowie, 1837. 5 volume set, 9 inches tall. A most attractive early Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and elegantly gilt tooled panels. A single gilt fillet frames the boards. There is a neat contemporary ink previous owner's name on the reverse of the paste down end paper. Portrait. Slight rubbing. A bookplate has been removed from the rear paste down end papers. A fine set of the works of this great English theologian and philosopher best known for his exposition of natural theology.

The binder has had to correct the volume number on two of the three volumes. A very good set.

London: Colburn and Bentley, 1831. 2 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. Full early Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin olive labels and exceptionally fine gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are marked and scuffed but with no splitting. A rather splendid, though somewhat worn set of this important and scarce work.

Londres (London, but probably Geneva, 1771. Full calf, 8 inches tall. A superb 18th century full calf with gilt raised bands, red label and fine floral gilt tooling to the panels. Speckled boards and pink edges. With the bookplate of Vane Londonderry. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. A splendid copy of a scarce title.

Top edges gilt. Slight creasing to the spine of the first volume. A most handsome set of this celebrated family history.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1927. Full calf, 7 inches tall. A superb 20th century full calf by Bayntun with gilt raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. Label, twin gilt fillets to the boards, dentelles and all edges. Slight scratching to the boards. A splendid edition of some of the greatest short stories ever written.

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1907. Full calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. An elegant Edwardian binding by Bayntun with gilt raised bands, ornate floral gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels. Twin gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards, Gilt dentelles and top edge. Slight fading to the spine, otherwise pristine. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. A typically luxurious printing on hand-made paper by Humphreys. This is one of the tall scarcer titles in this great series.

Avignon: Girard, 1761. Full calf, 7 1/2 inches tall. Full 18th century mottled calf with gilt raised bands, label and fine floral gilt tooling to the panels. Pink edges. Although the binding is still perfectly solid there is rubbing, creasing, loss to the bottom panel and a defunct worm hole on the upper board. With the rather splendid bookplate of The Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire and the neat ink signatures of 2 previous owners on the title page.

Gilt triple fillets and corner tools frame the boards. With the armorial bookplate of the great collector Cecil E Byas and a Sotheran bookseller's ticket. Profusely illustrated with full page engravings by Phiz. First edition. A fine copy of one of this Irish novelist's most amusing novels.

Watered silk endpapers. A finely printed and beautifully bound copy of this 12th or 13th century medieval French love story.

The annual contains an engraved frontispiece and title page, useful information for 1845, a selection of engraved views, engagements diary, accounts and a selection of verse.
