The Works of Thomas Chatterton
London: Longman and Rees, 1803. 3 volumes set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A handsome full Georgian 'Russia' calf with wide gilt bands, delicate gilt centre tools and twin fillets framing the boards. With the armorial bookplate of Lord Kinnaird of Rossie Priory. The binder has tooled III onto the spine of volume I, and I onto the spine of volume III. Engraved plates. Some rubbing and foxing to the preliminaries. A fine set of the first collected works of the tragic 18th century poet Thomas Chatterton, who after a life of poverty and genius, committed suicide in despair at the age of 17.

Cambridge: Merrill, Evans and Fletcher, 1785. 6 volume set, 9 inches tall.A good looking 18th century full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels, the volume label being interesting, with a lion peering over a swag atop a cartouche bearing the number. An ornate gilt roll frames the boards. All edges gilt. On the reverse of the free endpaper is an ink inscription to the "Earl of Ailesbury from the Editor". Some expert restoration but a fine solid set of the first edition of a scarce title.

Edinburgh: Thomson, 1814. Full calf, 5 3/4 inches tall. A splendid and rare little volume with the binder's ticket of J. Carfrae of Edinburgh. A superb little Regency binding with gilt raised bands, fine gilt tooling to the panels, red label and a series of gilt fillets and a blind roll framing the boards. The chart is present and correct though a little creased and frayed. David Steuart was Lord Provost of Edinburgh and a spirit dealer, whose great literary work quickly passed into oblivion.
