First Edition

London: John Murray, 1850. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A pristine set of this classic work in full mid-Victorian honey calf. With gilt raised bands, exquisite floral gilt tooling to the panels and double gilt fillet framing the boards. First edition. With the bookplate of Edward Nicholas Hurt of Wirksworth. This superb set is in pristine condition, both in terms of the text block and binding, evidently having not been read.

Edinburgh: Printed by Mosman and Brown, 1727-28. 4 volume set, 10 1/2 inches tall. An exceptionally nice set of this very scarce title in Georgian full diced calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and splendid gilt centre tools to the panels. A gilt fillet and wide blind roll frame the diced boards. Pink speckled edges. Some foxing, mostly confined to the preliminaries. A collection of all the material available to Anderson at the time relating to Mary Queen of Scots.

London: T. Becket, 1781. Full calf, 9 inches tall. A very fine binding by Riviere with gilt raised bands, delightful gilt floral tooling to the panels and triple gilt fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edge, the remaining edges untrimmed. An exceptionally clean and tall copy, being untrimmed. This volume does have the very rare leaf of advertisements but lacks the half title, which could be explained by the fact that it is in a later binding and that it was discarded, or could indicate it is not a true first. Slight splitting to the head and foot of the upper board but still perfectly firm and solid. A very nice copy of this great play.

London: Millar, 1755. Full morocco, 6 1/2 inches tall. A beautiful later binding by Morrell with gilt raised bands and delicate gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Lacks half title. Exceptionally fine and clean text and binding. First edition. Henry Fielding, one of the earliest and greatest English 18th century writers, traveled to Portugal in 1754 seeking relief from various acute medical conditions but died after a couple of months, this work was published the following year.

With the heraldic crest of Vane Londonderry in the top panel. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. A scarce and elegant set of this first edition triple decker.

Small split to the foot of volume one, but still perfectly solid.First edition in French of The Inheritance (Edinburgh, 1824). Scottish novelist Susan Ferrier's popular second novel, translated by Defauconpret, already established as the translator of sir Walter Scott.

Paris: (Cosson for) Charles Gosselin, 1826. 4 volume set, 7 inches tall. Quarter calf with twin labels and gilt centre tools. First edition in French. E. Preston Dargan, ‘Scott and the French Romantics’, PMLA, Vol. 49, No. 2 (Jun 1934), 22 (May 24); Garside, Raven and Schöwerling, The English Novel 1770-1829, 1826: 70. OCLC lists several European copies, but only one in the US (Texas A & M).

London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1764-1769. 3 volume set, 9 inches tall. 18th century full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt panels. The boards are framed within a gilt roll. There is a little cracking of the joints but still perfectly firm and solid. A previous owner's ink stamp, B.Girlie, is at the head of the title pages. A handsome set of the first collected edition of the works of this English poet, who was also one of the earliest practitioners of landscape gardening.

Twin gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards. A neat inscription "....On his leaving Eton Xmas 1866." on the first blank. A handsome clean set of Lappenberg's greatest work translated into English for the first time.

There are two issues of 1824, one with a De Wincop imprint the other with Gosselin and Ladvocat; Dargan lists only the latter — both are institutionally very rare.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1808. Full morocco, 7.5 inches tall. A very fine crushed morocco by Riviere with gilt raised bands, densely tooled gilt floral panels, triple fillets framing the boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. Bookplate. First edition.

First edition with dedication leaf to volume I and half titles to vols II & III, as called for. Corners a little bumped, very slight split to one joint and light spotting. From the library of Captain Thomas Robert Brigstoke and with his ink signature to each volume. Robert J. Hayhurst bookplate.

Wide gilt dentelles and all edges gilt. The first issue in book form. Embellished with 46 full page engravings and vignettes throughout by the Author. A fine clean set.
