Paris: L’auteur des Estampes, 1786-1793. 3 volume set, 12 inches tall. An old tipped in catalogue entry attributes this magnificent binding to Charles Lewis. With wide gilt raised bands, delicate and ornate gilt tooling to the panels, twin labels, dentelles and all edges gilt. Complete with 3 engraved title pages, portrait and 73 engraved plates after Le Barbier. There are an extra 18 stipple engraved plates and 70 highly decorative vignettes. Some speckling and scuffing to the boards. A super copy of this beautiful 18th century deluxe edition.

London: Chatto and Windus, 1882. 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A wonderful full crushed morocco binding by Riviere with gilt raised bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels and with triple gilt fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. With the armorial bookplates of W.H. Lever of Thornton Manor, Sir W. Hesketh Lever, Bart. and Baron, Lord Leverhulme of Bolton-Le Moors, all one and the same and the founder of 'Port Sunlight'. This beautiful set has an extra 89 plates, 34 hand-coloured, bound in, some particularly interesting ones, including Mr. Kean as Richard and as Count Bertram and 2 box tickets for His Majesty's Theatre. A unique set in pristine condition.

London and New York: Chiswick Press, Charles Whittingham and Co., c.1900. 2 volumes, 6 3/4 inches tall. A glorious full morocco binding almost certainly by by The Harcourt Bindery of Boston with gilt raised bands and remarkable floral gilt tooling and onlays to the panels and boards. Wide gilt dentelles frame exquisite green crushed morocco doublures featuring a red rose. Watered silk free endpapers. All edges gilt. These two volumes, containing the works of Thomas Chatterton, were part of a deluxe set, the Crown Edition, of 'The Poets of Great Britain' originally published in 72 volumes. This extra-illustrated set in this splendid binding is believed to be number 1 of 10 such sets. Fine sets of Chatterton's Poetical Works are scarce.

A very handsome late Victorian half crushed calf, almost certainly by Bickers, with gilt raised bands, gilt tooled panels and gilt top edges. Extra-Illustrated with 228 plates, many hand-coloured. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Wraxall's 'Postumous Memoirs', first published in 1836, are very readable and have real historical value. A fine set.

Extra illustrated with 124 engraved plates. From the library of Brian Forbes, the Film Director. A unique and most elegant item bound by one of the most celebrated firms of binders of the period.

A splendid half morocco by Riviere with gilt raised bands, 'hunting, shooting and fishing' gilt centre tools to the panels and gilt top edges. Bookplates. With a total of 33 plates. Inscribed by the author to his brother. Subscriber's special copy. These entertaining reminiscences contain the first recorded appearance of the phrase "like a duck to water".......I always took to shooting like a duck to water.

London: John Murray, 1903. 4 volume set, 8.75 inches tall. A splendid Edwardian full calf by Morrell with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine floral gilt tooling to the panels. Slight fading to the spines and some foxing facing the plates. Here the original 2 volumes have been extended to 4 with the original 20 plates and an additional 91 plates.

From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. With 78 interesting extra-illustrations. Essayist, critic, poet, and playwright Charles Lamb achieved lasting fame as a writer during the years 1820-1825, when he captivated the discerning English reading public with his personal essays in the London Magazine, collected as Essays of Elia and The Last Essays of Elia , known for their charm, humor, and perception.

Hazlitt is considered one of the greatest critics and essayists in the history of the English language.

Hill devoted himself to the study of 18th-century English literature, and established his reputation as the most learned commentator on the works of Samuel Johnson. Here we have six lectures on the revolutions in literary taste embellished with 60 extra-illustrations. A splendid copy.

London: Collins, c.1905. Half vellum, 7 1/2 inches tall. A very good looking Edwardian vellum binding decorated in the Art Nouveau style with a stylized gilt floral design and ornate label. With numerous illustrations and extra-illustrated with several original photographs dated May 1919 of the Lake District, one particularly picturesque image shows 'The Old Spinning Gallery' at Hartsop Patterdale. There is an ink inscription dated 1905 on the reverse of the free end paper.
