The Confessions of Jean Jacques Rousseau.
Privately Printed, 1896. 2 volume set, 10 inches tall. An elegant full morocco by J. Bleach with gilt raised bands, ornate gilt tooling to the panels and a gilt panel to the boards. Gilt top edges, the remainder deckled. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. This set is one of only 50 large paper copies printed on hand-made paper, here not numbered. This is also the first English edition without expurgation, hence the need for it to be privately printed! Illustrated with a series of etchings by Hedouin and 2 portraits. Rousseau's work is regarded as one of the first three major autobiographies, the previous two being of religious experience whereas his own confessions are the first told in terms of worldly experiences and personal feelings. A splendid copy of this important edition.
