London: George Virtue (1841). 2 volume set, 11 inches tall. A superb half hard grain morocco with splendid wide gilt raised bands, gilt framed panels and all edges gilt. The early Victorian binding has a very interesting ribbed paper on the boards and fine end papers. Embellished with I map, 2 engraved title pages and 118 full page engraved views. There is no portrait as is often the case. Some foxing to the plates. There is a small superficial stain to the upper board of volume 2. A lovely set.

Illustrated with frontispieces, a vignette on the title pages and and engraved portraits. Horatio Walpole the 4th Earl of Orford, creator of the Gothic masterpiece Strawberry Hill House, wrote 'The Castle of Otranto', considered the first Gothic novel. Slightly rubbed but a good looking set.

London: Edward Moxon, 1849. 7 volume set, 7 inches tall. A very pretty Victorian full calf binding by Zaehnsdorf with floral gilt tooling and a green shield label on a smooth back. A single gilt fillet frames the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. Portrait. The spines are slightly darkened and rubbed but overall a fine little set of the poetical works of one of the greatest English romantic poets.

A luxurious little binding by Ramage with gilt raised bands and beautiful gilt tooling to the panels and boards around orange rose inlays and leaves. Wide gilt dentelles with the same inlayed rose tooling and watered silk doublures and free 'end papers'. All edges gilt. There is considerable rubbing and the upper board is duller than the lower but still a firm and solid example of Ramage's splendid Edwardian bindings.

With the armorial bookplate of William Danby Esq. and the neat ink inscription 'Eliza Danby' on the title page. Some superficial marks to the lower board.

The remarkable English polymath, William Whewell, scientist, natural philosopher and theologian, was an important and influential figure still recognized today, partly from his skill as a neologist, coming up with such terms as scientist, physicist, linguistics, consilience, catastrophism, uniformitarianism, and astigmatism and, with Michael Faraday, such words as electrode, ion, dielectric, anode, and cathode. An impressive set.

This is the scarce full leather deluxe edition to celebrate this great exhibition of the finds of the People's Republic of China at the Royal Academy, London from September 1973 to January 1794.
