An exceptionally good looking late Victorian full calf with wide blind tooled raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt tooling to the panels. A gilt roll and fillets frame the monogram on the upper boards. Scuffs on the upper board of volume XII, otherwise a clean and very smart set. An extraordinary insight into the Napoleonic campaigns from the dispatches of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington.

Poems of Wordsworth.
London: Macmillan and Co., 1898. Full morocco, 6 1/4 inches tall. A luxurious little binding by Ramage with gilt raised bands and beautiful gilt tooling to the panels and boards around orange rose inlays and leaves. Wide gilt dentelles with the same inlayed rose tooling and watered silk doublures and free 'end papers'. All edges gilt. There is considerable rubbing and the upper board is duller than the lower but still a firm and solid example of Ramage's splendid Edwardian bindings.

With the armorial bookplate of Frederick H. Dutton of Sherborne House. There is a neat previous owner's name in ink on the title pages. Embellished with 150 engraved plates. A very fine set.

The remarkable English polymath, William Whewell, scientist, natural philosopher and theologian, was an important and influential figure still recognized today, partly from his skill as a neologist, coming up with such terms as scientist, physicist, linguistics, consilience, catastrophism, uniformitarianism, and astigmatism and, with Michael Faraday, such words as electrode, ion, dielectric, anode, and cathode. An impressive set.

This is the scarce full leather deluxe edition to celebrate this great exhibition of the finds of the People's Republic of China at the Royal Academy, London from September 1973 to January 1794. Many of the 365 exhibits are illustrated in colour with the rest in black and white.

Some expert restoration but a fine solid set of the first edition of a scarce title.
