A delightful little Regency set bound in full plum straight grain morocco with gilt bands and ornate gilt tooling on a flat back. A gilt roll frames the boards. All edges gilt. An engraved frontispiece to each volume. Some foxing to and facing the engravings, otherwise clean. With a neat ink former owner's name 'John Pocock Jnr.' on the title pages of volumes I and III, otherwise clean. A charming little set of the works of one of the greatest Latin poets, in English including three of the most famous poems in Latin literature, the Eclogues, the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid.

Paris: Éditions de Cluny, 1948. Full morocco, 7 inches tall. A Superb full straight grain morocco binding with the ticket of René Kieffer Reliures d'Art. The smooth spine has a a gilt olive branch device above and below title cartouche. On both boards there is a gilt embossed design incorporating a helmet and foliage. This unique copy is embellished with 20 original watercolours by Maurice Lauro illustrating scenes in the book. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. A splendid Victorian tree calf with gilt raised bands, bright twin labels, fine gilt tooling to the panels and twin gilt fillets framing the boards. A neat ink inscription, dated Christmas 1909, is to be found on the reverse of the front pastedown endpaper. With 24 plates illustrating this retelling of these 2000 year old epic Roman tales.

A delightful little Georgian full calf binding with gilt bands and elaborate gilt panels and an ornate gilt fillet framing 'PRIZE' on the upper board. The armorial bookplate of Thomas Clugas. Engraved frontispiece and title page. Some rubbing to the binding but no splitting or loss. Containing 'A Life of Virgil', 'Pastoral', 'The Georgics', and 'The Aeneid'. Publius Vergilius Maro, known as Virgil in English was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period and this English translation by Dryden is still considered the best.

London: John Murray, 1907. 3 volume set, 9 inches tall. A handsome Edwardian half morocco binding by Bickers with gilt raised bands, gilt crown and rose centre tools in the panels and gilt top edges. Foxing mostly confined to the preliminaries and edges. A few small marks to the boards but still a splendid looking set of 'a Selection from Her Majesty's Correspondence between the Years 1837 and 1861'.

Paris: Barbou, 1774 & 1777. 2 volumes bound in 1, 6 1/2 inches tall. A delightful French 18th century full morocco, ascribed to Bradel in a pencil note by Robert J. Hayhurst on the first blank with gilt bands, superb and very fine gilt tooling to the panels and boards and contrasting red label. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Engraved frontispiece and decorations. Bookplate. Velleius Paterculus was a Roman historian writing at the time of Christ covering the end of the Trojan wars, the death of Caesar up to the death of Emperor Augustus in AD 14. A beautiful and magnificent large-paper edition in full diced calf with gilt raised bands, gilt pallets, dentelles and a gilt roll framing the diced boards. This " is certainly the most beautiful octavo publication of the poet extant... the text is supposed to be faultless. Some few copies are struck off on LARGE PAPER, in imperial octavo, and sell high" (Dibdin). With the leather bookplate of Granville Hastings Wheler of Otterden Place. Voltaire's epic poem on the evils of religious extremism and civil disorder in French, printed and bound in England.

The spine is superbly tooled in the aesthetic manner with morocco onlays, the boards are bound with a natural tan morocco. Gilt top edges. This set in number 3 of 12 copies ,out of a limited edition of 300, on 'imperiales du Japon' with the plates in 4 states and the vignettes in 3. An unsentimental and gripping account of military life with the concept of honour vanishing from the post Napoleonic army. A superb set in pristine condition. In the original French.
