London: John Van Voorst, 1841. Full calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. Full early Victorian calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and dense gilt tooling to the panels. The spine is faded to gold, overall a delightful binding on a work of Natural History more whimsical than scientific. The engravings, in particular are particularly charming.

Paris: Éditions de Cluny, 1948. Full morocco, 7 inches tall. A Superb full straight grain morocco binding with the ticket of René Kieffer Reliures d'Art. The smooth spine has a a gilt olive branch device above and below title cartouche. On both boards there is a gilt embossed design incorporating a helmet and foliage. This unique copy is embellished with 20 original watercolours by Maurice Lauro illustrating scenes in the book. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. London: Seeley and Co., 1894. Full calf, 8 inches tall. A splendid Victorian tree calf with gilt raised bands, bright twin labels, fine gilt tooling to the panels and twin gilt fillets framing the boards. A neat ink inscription, dated Christmas 1909, is to be found on the reverse of the front pastedown endpaper. With 24 plates illustrating this retelling of these 2000 year old epic Roman tales.

Paris: Barbou, 1774 & 1777. 2 volumes bound in 1, 6 1/2 inches tall. A delightful French 18th century full morocco, ascribed to Bradel in a pencil note by Robert J. Hayhurst on the first blank with gilt bands, superb and very fine gilt tooling to the panels and boards and contrasting red label. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Engraved frontispiece and decorations. Bookplate. Velleius Paterculus was a Roman historian writing at the time of Christ covering the end of the Trojan wars, the death of Caesar up to the death of Emperor Augustus in AD 14. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. Londini (London): Apud A. Dulae & Co., 1800. 2 volume set, 11 inches tall. A beautiful and magnificent large-paper edition in full diced calf with gilt raised bands, gilt pallets, dentelles and a gilt roll framing the diced boards. This " is certainly the most beautiful octavo publication of the poet extant... the text is supposed to be faultless. Some few copies are struck off on LARGE PAPER, in imperial octavo, and sell high" (Dibdin). With the leather bookplate of Granville Hastings Wheler of Otterden Place. London: Charles C. Arnold, 1825. Full calf, 5.5 inches tall. A delightful little binding in full straight grain calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. The boards framed within gilt fillets and a gilt roll. Engraved frontispiece. Neat ink inscription dated 1833 on first blank and previous owner's name on the title page, dated 1864. Voltaire's epic poem on the evils of religious extremism and civil disorder in French, printed and bound in England.

Paris: Armand Magnier, 1898. 2 volume set, 10.25 inches tall. 2 magnificent full morocco bindings by Stroobants. The spine is superbly tooled in the aesthetic manner with morocco onlays, the boards are bound with a natural tan morocco. Gilt top edges. This set in number 3 of 12 copies ,out of a limited edition of 300, on 'imperiales du Japon' with the plates in 4 states and the vignettes in 3. An unsentimental and gripping account of military life with the concept of honour vanishing from the post Napoleonic army. A superb set in pristine condition. In the original French.

Edinburgh: Blackwood, 1869. Half calf, 8.75 inches tall. A handsome copy of this memoir of this celebrated Scottish Metaphysician. Portrait. Half calf with gilt raised bands, label and gilt panels.

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1903. 2 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. A superb full crushed morocco binding for Hatchards. With raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Vellum wallet, 4.5 inches tall. Very fine gilt tooling by Guilio Giannini, the famous Florentine binders, covering a double pocket watered silk lining.

London: The Religious Tract Society, c.1860. Half morocco, 6 inches tall. A fine mid-Victorian binding with gilt raised bands and neat gilt pallets and centre tools to the panels.

Paris: 'Disciples d'Hippocrate', 1942. Half crushed morocco, 11 inches tall. A simple binding with gilt tooled titles, fleurons and top edge. One of 250 copies on 'velin de rives', this being number 245. With 13 explicit illustrations in black and white and 12 in colour, with an extra suite of the 12 colour lithographs. A fine copy.

Paris: Ollendorff, 1897. Half crushed morocco by Durvand, 7.5 inches tall. With raised bands, label and gilt top edge. The foredge has not been trimmed, causing a rather eccentric effect with some leaves extending about an inch further than others, a deluxe style of the period. There is an inscription from the author to an A.M.R. Rolo. A lovely. copy.
