A remarkable and beautiful Regency full tree calf binding with gilt bands, triple labels, including charming olive volume number labels, and lovely gilt tooling to the panels. The striking tree calf boards are framed within a rather jaunty gilt roll. A name has been removed from the head of the title page of the first volume, there are a few scratches, a little superficial loss to the ubiquitous defunct insect and occasional light foxing but overall a splendid bright set in wonderful condition with absolutely no splitting. With notes by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens, revised by Isaac Reed with is a particularly respected edition with a large, highly readable text.

First editions from Rockcorry Castle in Ireland, sadly demolished in the 1950s, with neat ink inscription running vertically on the title pages 'Rock Corry Castle 1828'. There is some rubbing, superficial loss to long defunct insect and minor splitting to the binding, which remains firm and solid. Wraxall's great history covers the period from 'The Accession of Henry the Third, to the Death of Louis the Fourteenth'.

Remarkably someone has seen fit to shoot volume I in the panel beneath the volume label, whether having taken offence at the text or as collateral damage when taking a shot at a stag that had strayed into the library, one can only surmise. Remarkably someone has seen fit to shoot volume I in the panel beneath the volume label, whether having taken offence at the text or as collateral damage when taking a shot at a stag that had strayed into the library, one can only surmise. This has caused the text to 'ruck' and tear at the gutter from page 337 to 513 (see the image which shows the worst effect). There is a very faint trace of powdered metal on the 'rucked' paper. Portrait in volume III. A remarkable and memorable copy of this scarce History of Ireland.

The 53 consecutive volumes eventually were extended to 109 volumes (see our complete set) but as there is no indication of a volume number on the case it would seem that this was all that the original owner possessed. The volumes are in excellent condition the case itself, still with its original watered silk lining, is in good solid condition but has some scuffing, rubbing and worm holed from a long defunct insect. A remarkable survival.
