Tree Calf

Oxford: J. Cooke et al.. 1795. 5 volumes, 8 3/4 inches tall. A superb English Country House 18th century tree calf with gilt bands on a smooth back, triple labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. A Greek key pattern roll frames the boards. Gilt dentelles and speckled blue edges. All in pristine condition. George Horne was a great defender of the High Church tradition in Anglicanism.

Chichester: Printed by W. Mason for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1809. Full calf, 6 1/2 inches tall. An exceptionally pretty little Regency tree calf binding with gilt bands and extra gilt panels and contrasting red label. Speckled blue edges. The tree calf is framed within a Greek key pattern roll. With the Fothergill armorial bookplate. With an old previous owner's signature ", Elizabeth Hile, Spinster" on the first blank. A splendid copy of this work by the once highly popular English 18th century poet and biographer.

London: J. Nichols, F.C. and J. Rivington et al., 1813. 21 volumes, 9 1/2 inches tall. A remarkable and beautiful Regency full tree calf binding with gilt bands, triple labels, including charming olive volume number labels, and lovely gilt tooling to the panels. The striking tree calf boards are framed within a rather jaunty gilt roll. A name has been removed from the head of the title page of the first volume, there are a few scratches, a little superficial loss to the ubiquitous defunct insect and occasional light foxing but overall a splendid bright set in wonderful condition with absolutely no splitting. With notes by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens, revised by Isaac Reed with is a particularly respected edition with a large, highly readable text.

London: A.Strahan and T. Cadell, 1795. 3 volume set, 11 inches tall. A very good looking tall 18th century tree calf with gilt pallets and twin labels. Blue speckled edges. First editions from Rockcorry Castle in Ireland, sadly demolished in the 1950s, with neat ink inscription running vertically on the title pages 'Rock Corry Castle 1828'. There is some rubbing, superficial loss to long defunct insect and minor splitting to the binding, which remains firm and solid. Wraxall's great history covers the period from 'The Accession of Henry the Third, to the Death of Louis the Fourteenth'.

London: John Murray, 1813. 3 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A superb set, fresh from an English Country House, of this scarce history in Regency tree calf with gilt pallets and fine title labels. Speckled edges. With an armorial bookplate and the neat ink former owner's name at the head of the title pages, 'James F. Leitch'. Some scuffing and superficial scratches, overall a lovely set of this history in English, translated from the French.

Oxford: University Press, 1909. Full calf, 7 inches tall. A beautiful 'Oxford Binding' with gilt raised bands, floral tooling to the panels and a gilt fillet framing the tree calf boards. With an ink previous owner's name dated 1913 on the first blank. A fine anthology 'Being 1150 Poems and Extracts by 300 Authors' covering over 600 years, in a delightful Edwardian tree calf.

London: J. Johnson, 1798. 2 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. Very pretty little 18th century tree calf bindings with gilt bands on a smooth back, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. With a neat ink previous owner's name "Mary Anne Watten (?) November 1825". Embellish with engravings by Stothard. A firm and clean set of these once hugely popular and influential poems.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1890. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A splendid late Victorian tree calf by Riviere with gilt raised bands, delicate floral gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels. A gilt roll frames the boards. With 8 folding maps. Scratching to the lower board of the fourth volume, but still a fine and elegant set of this classic history.

London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1890. Full calf, 8 inches tall. A classic late Victorian tree calf binding by Griffiths with gilt raised bands and exceptional extra gilt panels. With the gilt prize block of Waterloo College on the upper board and their bookplate on the front paste down end paper. Well illustrated throughout. Some light foxing. The title continues "...the Natural History and geology of the Countries Visited during the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World, under the Command of Captain Fitz Roy, R.N.."

London: G. Bell and Sons, 1910. 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A classic Edwardian full calf binding by Spottiswoode with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. The tree calf boards have a gilt armorial block and a gilt fillet border. Embellished with 25 maps and plans. A handsome copy of this life of Napoleon Buonaparte.

London: James Parker and Co., 1894. Full calf, 6 inches tall. A splendid little tree calf binding by Bickers with gilt raised bands, label and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Pink edges. With a gilt embossed prize block on the upper board and prize inscription on the first blank. A delightful copy of this great devotional work.

London: J. Johnson, 1808. 2 volume set, 5 1/2 inches tall. An absolutely delightful little set in Regency tree calf. With gilt bands, twin labels and very delicate little centre tools in the panels. With the binder's ticket of B. Scott of Carlisle. Speckled edges. Portrait. With the neat ink inscription 'M.D. Ballantine Sept 24 1808 on both first blanks.

London: Lawrence & Bullen, 1891. 2 volume set, 7 inches tall. A splendid tree calf binding by Otto Shulze of Edinburgh with raised bands, fine gilt tooling to the panels and labels. A delicate gilt fillets frames the boards, wide dentelles and gilt top edge. Bookplate. This excellent large paper edition is printed on hand made paper and limited to just 200 copies. Edited by Alfred Pollard and with a preface by Algernon Swinburne, who considered Herrick to be "the greatest song writer ever born of English race". A lovely set of the most celebrated works of this great English 17th century poet.

Paris: Chez Nyon, Saillant, Desaint, 1766. 2 volume set, 6 3/4 inches tall. A beautiful 18th century tree calf binding from the celebrated Library of Lord Macclesfield and with his 2 armorial bookplates and, as usual, his armorial blind stamps. With gilt bands, superb gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels. Yellow edges. The contents are complete with the two folding engraved plates and woodcut devices to the title page, decorative initials and head and tail pieces. Slight rubbing. This is the history of Xenophon's brilliant military leadership in leading the 10,000 Greek mercenaries in their retreat from Cyrus's attempt to take control of the Achaemenid Empire in the 4th century B.C.. In the original French.

A splendid tree calf binding by Bickers with gilt raised bands, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. A single gilt fillet frames the boards. Portrait and 20 further illustrations. Eighth edition, revised. Slight foxing on the portrait, otherwise clean. A handsome copy of the Life of Napoleon Bonaparte.

London: Whellier, 1824 & 1821. 2 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. Full Georgian tree calf binding in excellent condition with the binder's ticket of S.Payne of Dursley.. The bindings have ornate gilt pallets bordering a wide inked band and large gilt centre tools, typical of the period. A neat previous owner's ink stamp is to be found on the free endpapers. Volume 1, the 5th edition, contains the Laws and Statutes and Criminal Law of England with a supplement. Volume 2, the 1st edition, contains a further supplement. It is unusual to find both volumes, especially in this condition.
