The tree calf is framed with a gilt Greek roll. Yellow edges. Loss to one headcap, some rubbing and occasional superficial loss of leather to a long defunct insect, but still a fine looking set of the poetical works of this great satirist.

The History of Wales.
London: Johnson, 1786. Full calf, 11 inches tall. Nearly a magnificent full 18th century tree calf from the library of Lord Londonderry and with his spectacular martial bookplate. With superb gilt tooling to the panels, gilt bands and bright red label. Sadly there is some serious scuffing to the label and panel below it as well as a scuff on the lower board. Some light foxing and sporadic small ink stains. A handsome tall copy in a flawed but still impressive 'Country House' binding.

Edinburgh: Charles Elliot, 1777. Full calf, 7 1/2 inches tall. A most attractive 18th century tree calf with gilt bands, red label and magnificent gilt centre tools, one in the form of a swan amongst the reeds. Bolingbroke is recognised as a great influence on Voltaire and the early US presidents, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Also influential in the colonies was his contention on liberty: that one is "free not from the law, but by the law".

London: Evans, 1781. 2 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A rather splendid 18th century tree calf with a smooth back, triple labels and dense and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. A single filet frames the boards. Rubbed and with some loss to a long defunct insect and some very slight splitting. With 2 folding maps. Thucydides is generally regarded as one of the first true historians and his wrote his great history of the Peloponnesian War as it took place.

Frontispiece and engraved vignette to each title page. Sadly there is staining throughout the fourth volume which has not affected the shape or thickness of that volume or indeed of its binding. A fine Italian printing in the original language.
