London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1869. Leather spine and wooden Mauchline Ware boards, 7 inches tall. With raised bands and gilt tooling to the panels around a thistle centre tool. The front board bears in image of Queen Victoria seated in front of spinning wheel above some text, the rear board shows Dunkeld Cathedral. The volume is illustrated with the 6 engravings called for and numerous vignettes but also with 12 mounted original photographs. All edges gilt. There is a little foxing especially to the mounts of the photographs but overall in excellent condition, with no chipping to the boards.

London: John Murray, 1813. 3 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A superb set, fresh from an English Country House, of this scarce history in Regency tree calf with gilt pallets and fine title labels. Speckled edges. With an armorial bookplate and the neat ink former owner's name at the head of the title pages, 'James F. Leitch'. Some scuffing and superficial scratches, overall a lovely set of this history in English, translated from the French.

London: George Virtue (1841). 2 volume set, 11 inches tall. A superb half hard grain morocco with splendid wide gilt raised bands, gilt framed panels and all edges gilt. The early Victorian binding has a very interesting ribbed paper on the boards and fine end papers. Embellished with I map, 2 engraved title pages and 118 full page engraved views. There is no portrait as is often the case. Some foxing to the plates. There is a small superficial stain to the upper board of volume 2. A lovely set.

London: Richard Bentley, 1834. Full Calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A most unusual early Victorian full calf binding by E. Watson of Marylebone High Street, and with their ticket. With raised bands, gilt pallets and neat geometric gilt tooling. Gilt corner tools and double fillets frame the boards. Ink inscription on the front free endpaper. A very clean copy of the second edition of this travelogue by the writer and art critic best known for his 'Gothic Novel' "Vathek".

London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1890. Full calf, 8 inches tall. A classic late Victorian tree calf binding by Griffiths with gilt raised bands and exceptional extra gilt panels. With the gilt prize block of Waterloo College on the upper board and their bookplate on the front paste down end paper. Well illustrated throughout. Some light foxing. The title continues "...the Natural History and geology of the Countries Visited during the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World, under the Command of Captain Fitz Roy, R.N.."

London: William Sams, 1822. Full morocco, 14 1/2 inches tall. In a later full crushed morocco by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. A panel with elaborate gilt corner tooling and a wide and elegant roll frames the boards. Wide gilt dentelles and all edges. The folio has been preserved in a sturdy buckram case, ensuring the pristine condition of the volume. Tissues guard the plates, which show scenes of many vibrantly hand-coloured characters rather than emphasising the great buildings of the city which tend to be in the background. We see a lively portrayal of beautifully costumed Parisians in diverse walks of life. A splendid copy of one of the finest books of the period on Paris.

London: Longman et al., 1832-1855. 5 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. A very attractive little set in an early Victorian half calf binding, with dense gilt tooling and twin labels to the smooth back. Each volume has an engraved title page. Armorial bookplate. This is the complete section on Spain and Portugal from Lardner's famous 'Cabinet of History' in excellent condition.

London: John and Arthur Arch, 1820. 2 volume set, 9 3/4 inches tall. A spectacular Regency full straight grain morocco binding with wide elaborately gilt tooled raised bands and superb and complex gilt and blind tooling to the boards. Very fine wide dentelles and all edges gilt. Faint signs of the removal of a bookplate in both volumes, very slight rubbing minor foxing to the plates and tissues. With all 50 full page engravings called for. A charming well illustrated work in an exceptional binding of the highest quality.

London: T. Egerton et al., 1796. 2 volume set, 9 3/4 inches tall. A remarkable Georgian full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels and an extraordinary series of blind fillets and rolls framing the boards. With gilt dentelles and all edges. Embellished with aquatint vignettes on the engraved title pages, and a further 45 engraved or aquatint plates. There is heavy foxing to the title pages and less to the rest of the prints. The binding itself is rubbed but firm and not splitting. A striking copy of the second, enlarged, edition.

London: Longman et al., 1814. Full morocco, 15 inches tall. A magnificent tall full hard grain morocco with gilt raised bands, superb twin labels and spectacular gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are framed by triple gilt fillets and centre tools. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Embellished with 95 splendid engravings. The tallest and best edition of this work in an exceptional binding.

London: Robinson, 1789. 3 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A fine copy with wide margins in a superb 18th century tree calf with gilt bands and magnificent labels on a smooth back. Yellow edges. From the library of Vane Londonderry, Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. This is the first English edition with half titles, folding engraved map, folding engraved plan of Madrid, folding engraved view of Gibraltar and a further 8 folding engraved plates.

London: Orr, 1853. Full morocco, 10 1/4 inches tall. A stunning mid-Victorian full straight grain morocco by Mansell. With gilt raised bands and superb extra gilt tooling to the panels. The straight grain of the boards is framed within a series of gilt fillets and rolls. All the edges are gauffered. Embellished with 25 full page steel engraved views and further vignettes and full page wood engravings throughout. Slight foxing to the frontispiece and title page, otherwise clean and with minor abrasions to the upper board. A remarkable example of this fine edition.

London: Arthur Hall, 1853. 3 volume set, 8 inches tall. A neat Mid-Victorian half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt centre tool to the panels. Engraved frontispieces and title pages. A previous owner, Abraham Dawson(?), has left his name, dated 1862, on the second title page, and has left a neat manuscript list of contents on the reverse of the title pages and a page number on the engraved title page of volume 1.

London: Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, 1860. 2 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. A splendid full calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and elegant gilt tooling to the panels. Folding map, 58 full page tinted wood cuts and 3 plates of ancient Indian music. An ink inscription on the first blank on 'leaving Eton' dated 1867. A superb set of this profusely illustrated work.

London: Gale, Curtis and Fenner, 1814. Full morocco, 10.75 inches tall. A splendid later 19th century binding by Root with gilt raised bands, very fine panels, triple fillets framing the boards, dentelles and top edge. Adorned with 20 beautiful circular hand coloured aquatints. A superb copy of this most attractive work.

London: Rodwell and Martin, 1820. Full morocco, 10.5 inches tall. A most attractive binding with twin gilt raised bands and extra gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are also densely decorated with gilt and blind tooling framing an elaborate central device. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Slightly rubbed but still a fine firm and clean example. With 60 splendid views and vignette on the title page. A superb example of this scarce work.

London: Hall, Virtue & Co, 1851. Full morocco, 10 inches tall. A splendid early Victorian morocco binding with raised bands, elaborate gilt tooling to the panels, superb gilt and blind tooling to the boards, gilt dentelles and all edges. From the Library and with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst. embellished with 28 steel engravings including views of Spain, Malta and North Africa.

London: Rodwell and Martin, 1820. Full straight grain morocco, 10.5 inches tall. A glorious Regency binding with wide gilt raised bands and dense blind tooling to the panels. The boards are magnificently tooled in blind and gilt. All edges gilt. There is a tiny amount of worming effecting the gutter of the front endpaper and preliminaries. With 60 splendid views and vignette on the title page. A superb example of this scarce work.

London: Jennings, n.d. c.1837. Full morocco, 11.5 inches tall. A splendid binding from the beginning of the Victorian period with wide gilt raised bands, magnificent tooling to the boards and all edges gilt. Including the title page there are 42 engraved views by David Roberts. Foxing, particularly heavy on the title page. With the bookseller's ticket of Pocock of Bath. A rare tall edition, with no text, in a spectacular binding.
