London: John and Arthur Arch, 1820. 2 volume set, 9 3/4 inches tall. A spectacular Regency full straight grain morocco binding with wide elaborately gilt tooled raised bands and superb and complex gilt and blind tooling to the boards. Very fine wide dentelles and all edges gilt. Faint signs of the removal of a bookplate in both volumes, very slight rubbing minor foxing to the plates and tissues. With all 50 full page engravings called for. A charming well illustrated work in an exceptional binding of the highest quality.

London: Robinson, 1789. 3 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A fine copy with wide margins in a superb 18th century tree calf with gilt bands and magnificent labels on a smooth back. Yellow edges. From the library of Vane Londonderry, Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. This is the first English edition with half titles, folding engraved map, folding engraved plan of Madrid, folding engraved view of Gibraltar and a further 8 folding engraved plates.

London: Longman et al., 1814. Full morocco, 15 inches tall. A magnificent tall full hard grain morocco with gilt raised bands, superb twin labels and spectacular gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are framed by triple gilt fillets and centre tools. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Embellished with 95 splendid engravings. The tallest and best edition of this work in an exceptional binding.

London: Virtue, 1836. Full straight grain morocco, 11 inches tall. A fabulously bound set with extraordinary gilt and white metal tooled spine and boards.the elaborate 'cathedral' design on all four boards is made up from individual tooling, as is the superb tooling on the spines. All edges gilt. Illustrated with 2 engraved titles and 106 full page engraved views and I folding map. Some foxing to the plates and slight fading to the spine, but still a fine and spectacular set.

London: Rodwell and Martin, 1820. Full straight grain morocco, 10.5 inches tall. A glorious Regency binding with wide gilt raised bands and dense blind tooling to the panels. The boards are magnificently tooled in blind and gilt. All edges gilt. There is a tiny amount of worming effecting the gutter of the front endpaper and preliminaries. With 60 splendid views and vignette on the title page. A superb example of this scarce work.

London: Gale, Curtis and Fenner, 1814. Full morocco, 10.75 inches tall. A splendid later 19th century binding by Root with gilt raised bands, very fine panels, triple fillets framing the boards, dentelles and top edge. Adorned with 20 beautiful circular hand coloured aquatints. A superb copy of this most attractive work.

The boards are also densely decorated with gilt and blind tooling framing an elaborate central device. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Slightly rubbed but still a fine firm and clean example. With 60 splendid views and vignette on the title page. A superb example of this scarce work.

London: Orr, 1853. Full morocco, 10 1/4 inches tall. A stunning mid-Victorian full straight grain morocco by Mansell. With gilt raised bands and superb extra gilt tooling to the panels. The straight grain of the boards is framed within a series of gilt fillets and rolls. All the edges are gauffered. Embellished with 25 full page steel engraved views and further vignettes and full page wood engravings throughout. Slight foxing to the frontispiece and title page, otherwise clean and with minor abrasions to the upper board. A remarkable example of this fine edition.

London: Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, 1860. 2 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. A splendid full calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and elegant gilt tooling to the panels. Folding map, 58 full page tinted wood cuts and 3 plates of ancient Indian music. An ink inscription on the first blank on 'leaving Eton' dated 1867. A superb set of this profusely illustrated work.

London: Newbery, 1798. 5 volume set, 6 inches tall. A wonderful full straight grain morocco in exceptional condition with gilt bands and simple late 18th century gilt tooling to the panels and a single gilt fillet framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. This is the complete first edition, with later editions expanded to 6 volumes. Embellished with 4 hand coloured folding maps. This charming work 'comprehends' tours taken by Moritz, Twiss, Johnson, Pennant, amongst many others. There are a few small marks but the set is otherwise pristine indicating that it has spent no time in any traveller's pocket since publication. The set is housed in a modern open front cloth box.

London: Cassell,Petter & Galpin, c.1880. 2 volumes, 13 inches tall. A splendid example of the work of Hammond, a similar work by him is found in the British Library collection of British Bookbindings. With deep gilt raised bands, gilt on green calf inlays in the panels and on the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Further volumes of Illustrated Travels were published, on offer here are the first 2 volumes in a Victorian binding of the highest quality.

London: Wilkie and Robinson et al., 1810. 3 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A neat set bound in a later full calf by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands, triple labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are framed within a triple fillet and corner tools. Gilt dentelles and top edges. With the armorial bookplate. With all 44 plates, as called for. Some fading to the spines but still a very good looking set.

Paris: Michel Lévy Frères, 1854. Full morocco, 7 1/4 inches tall. A beautiful full crushed red morocco binding by Noulhac, the great Parisian binder, with gilt raised bands, fine gilt floral tooling to the panels and superb gilt tooling to the boards. Dentelles and all edges gilt. The first edition, with 1853 on the title page but 1854 on the original wraps, which are bound in. With the bookplate of Daniel Henry Holmes. An anecdotal guide to Constantinople. In the original French.

London: Jennings, n.d. c.1837. Full morocco, 11.5 inches tall. A splendid binding from the beginning of the Victorian period with wide gilt raised bands, magnificent tooling to the boards and all edges gilt. Including the title page there are 42 engraved views by David Roberts. Foxing, particularly heavy on the title page. With the bookseller's ticket of Pocock of Bath. A rare tall edition, with no text, in a spectacular binding.

London: T. Egerton et al., 1796. 2 volume set, 9 3/4 inches tall. A remarkable Georgian full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels and an extraordinary series of blind fillets and rolls framing the boards. With gilt dentelles and all edges. Embellished with aquatint vignettes on the engraved title pages, and a further 45 engraved or aquatint plates. There is heavy foxing to the title pages and less to the rest of the prints. The binding itself is rubbed but firm and not splitting. A striking copy of the second, enlarged, edition.

Paris: Charpentier, 1877. 2 volume set, 7 1/4 inches tall. An exquisite full crushed morocco by Pétrus Ruban with gilt raised bands, fine and delicate tooling to the panels and boards, gilt dentelles and all edges. Frontispiece. With the bookplate of Daniel Henry Holmes. Number 8 of just 10 copies on 'papier de Chine'. First edition in book form. Original wraps bound in. A collection of articles on traveling in the Orient, China, Japan, Persia, Egypt, Greece and Turkey with its mysticism, romance and art and literature.

London: Hall, Virtue & Co, 1851. Full morocco, 10 inches tall. A splendid early Victorian morocco binding with raised bands, elaborate gilt tooling to the panels, superb gilt and blind tooling to the boards, gilt dentelles and all edges. From the Library and with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst. embellished with 28 steel engravings including views of Spain, Malta and North Africa.

A previous owner, Abraham Dawson(?), has left his name, dated 1862, on the second title page, and has left a neat manuscript list of contents on the reverse of the title pages and a page number on the engraved title page of volume 1.
