A gilt roll frames the boards and the gilt prize block of Rossall School on the upper boards. With the prize bookplate of Rossall school on the first paste down endpaper. Embellished with colour maps showing St. Paul's missionary journeys.

A handsome early Victorian half calf from the recently dispersed Country House library of Bridehead in Dorset, with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Pink speckled edges. With the armorial bookplate of Robert Williams of Bridehead. A fine copy of the first edition of this treatise 'Designed Chiefly for the use of Students in Theology'.

Edinburgh: Sutherland and Knox and London: Hamilton, Adams, and Co., 1850. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall, A classic Victorian full calf by Hatchards of Piccadilly with gilt raised bands, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. An ink inscription dated Christmas Day, 1850 on the third blank. From the country house 'Bride Head' Library. With 2 engraved portraits and 4 engraved title pages. A fine set on the life of the great Scottish economist and churchman, Thomas Chalmers, by his sin-in-law.

Oxford: J. Cooke et al.. 1795. 5 volumes, 8 3/4 inches tall. A superb English Country House 18th century tree calf with gilt bands on a smooth back, triple labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. A Greek key pattern roll frames the boards. Gilt dentelles and speckled blue edges. All in pristine condition. George Horne was a great defender of the High Church tradition in Anglicanism.

London: Scott, Webster, & Geary, 1839. 4 volume set, 9 inches tall. In a magnificent Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and superb extra-gilt tooling to the panels. Twin gilt fillets frame the boards. With an engraved frontispiece and 22 engraved portraits. Slight foxing to the plates and the preliminaries, otherwise clean. From the library of George Capron of Southwick Hall. An extremely smart set of this classic history of the Reformation of the Church of England by this great historian, philosopher and theologian.

London and Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1861; 1864. Nimmo, 1869. 3 volumes, 7 1/2 inches tall. Fine Victorian uniform full calf bindings with gilt raised bands, contrasting twin labels and gilt tooling to the panels by J. Maclaren of Edinburgh. A good looking run of these works by the great Scottish folklorist, paleontologist and geologist, Hugh Miller.

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1816. 4 Volumes, 8 1/2" tall. A splendid half calf binding with all the typical Regency features on a smooth back. With gilt, inked and blind bands and an elaborate center tooling and a curious blind crest framing the volume number. Speckled edges. Each volume covers various centuries, and a fifth volume was published at a later date. This history is rarely found in such good condition.

London: Longman and Co., et al., 1838. 4 volume set, 8 3/4" tall. A classic Victorian full calf by the great firm of Hayday with raised bands, twin labels, and neat gilt tooling to the panels. Twin gilt fillets, one blind fillet and gilt corner tools frame the boards. Portrait. A handsome set of the works of the highly influential 18th century theologian, William Paley, mostly remembered for his work on natural theology and ethics.

London: George Bell & Sons 1878. 2 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A neat Victorian full calf binding by Hatchards with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. A gilt prize block is framed on the upper boards by gilt and blind fillets. Prize bookplate. A very fine copy of the revised 4th edition.

London: James Parker and Co., 1894. Full calf, 6 inches tall. A splendid little tree calf binding by Bickers with gilt raised bands, label and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Pink edges. With a gilt embossed prize block on the upper board and prize inscription on the first blank. A delightful copy of this great devotional work.

Chiswick: Printed by C. Whittingham for R. Triphook, 1822. Half Calf, 6 1/2 inches tall. A good looking later binding in half mottled calf with a smooth back, gilt pallets, centre tools and label. Gilt top edge. Portrait. Small split to the head of the upper board but perfectly firm and solid. Foxing to the preliminaries. Martyred for his opposition to the Protestant Reformation, More is venerated as a Saint by the Catholic Church.

A very pretty little early Victorian binding in pristine condition with raised bands and ornate gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With a neat ink inscription, dated 1842 on the first blank. Sturm's 'Reflections' was hugely popular and influential in its day and has been in print ever since. Beethoven owned A copy of 'Reflections' which he annotated extensively.

London: William Pickering, 1844. Full morocco, 9 1/2 inches tall. An extraordinary and magnificent full hard grain morocco by Catherall & Pritchard with gilt raised bands, ornate gilt tooling to the panels and boards, gilt dentelles and all edges gauffered. Unpaginated, including facsimile title page and colophon of Richard Grafton (1550), printed in red and black throughout. Ornamental initials and woodcut headbands and musical notations. Light foxing. From the library, and with the bookplate of, R.H.L.-C. de Beaumont.

A reprint of a volume of selections from the 'Book of Common Prayer' as set to music by John Marbecke (or Merbecke). First printed in 1550 by Richard Grafton, and here reprinted by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press.

Paris: Didot Junior, Typographiae Fratris Regis, 1788. Tree Calf with morocco spine, 13 1/2 inches tall. A magnificent and most unusual French 18th century binding with a straight grain morocco binding with two green calf labels and wonderful gilt floral tooling. A superb gilt vine roll frames the boards. Lovely printed bookseller's ticket on the paste down end paper. Engraved title page and frontispiece. Pristine condition. In the original Latin. Since its first printing in 1471-2, 'The Imitation of Christ' has remained one of the most enduring and popular of all Christian devotional works.

London: Crosby & Co., 1811. Half calf, 5 1/2 inches tall. A superb little Regency half calf binding with gilt bands and tooling to the panels and green label. With the binder's ticket of James Condie of Paisley. Engraved frontispiece.

London: Cadell and Davies, 1811. 2 volumes bound in 1, complete, 8 1/4 inches tall. Full Regency calf with wide blind tooled raised bands and ornate gilt and blind panels. A series of blind and gilt fillets and rolls frame the boards. With the armorial bookplate of Benj. Philpot Chr. Coll. Cant. Soc. , the neat ink inscription 'Gustavus Wulff from B. Philpot 1832' on the first blank and a partly obscured neat ink inscription at the head of the title page. Some rubbing and marking but still an interesting binding.

Leyden: Elzevir, 1658. Full morocco, 5 1/4 inches tall. A beautiful binding with gilt raised bands, delicate gilt tooling to the panels, triple fillet framing the boards and gilt dentelles and all edges. A tiny ink inscription on the reverse of the free endpaper. With the bookplate of Geoffrey Aspin who attributes the binding to Masson-Debonelle. A superb little Elzevir edition in excellent condition. In Latin.
