The boards are very finely tooled creating an elaborate gilt panel with red calf onlays. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Foxing to the reverse of the free endpapers and first blank then perfectly clean. This volume contains 2 of Tennyson's great Idylls ,'Gareth and Lynette,' follows the coming of Arthur, and the other title in this volume, 'The Last Tournament', immediately precedes 'Guinevere'. A delightful volume.

The English Poet and novelist, Tupper, was one of the most read poets in the United Kingdom and North America for several decades, becoming a great favorite of Queen Victoria. Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1929. Half morocco, 8 inches tall. A robust half morocco binding by Zaehnsdorf with raised bands and gilt titles and top edge. Profusely illustrated throughout. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. A highly entertaining and well respected social history.

London: John and Arthur Arch, 1820. 2 volume set, 9 3/4 inches tall. A spectacular Regency full straight grain morocco binding with wide elaborately gilt tooled raised bands and superb and complex gilt and blind tooling to the boards. Very fine wide dentelles and all edges gilt. Faint signs of the removal of a bookplate in both volumes, very slight rubbing minor foxing to the plates and tissues. With all 50 full page engravings called for. A charming well illustrated work in an exceptional binding of the highest quality.

London: Johnson, Cuthell et al., 1804. 2 volume set, 11 1/4 inches tall. A simple but elegant later half morocco by Ramage with gilt raised bands, ornate centre tools and top edges gilt. Decorated with portrait frontispiece and 14 very fine full page engravings. Bookplate. This hugely successful epic poem, written by Tasso in the middle of the 16th century, tells the story of the First Crusade in which Godfrey of Bouillon leads the Christian Knights into battle, and eventual victory, against the Muslims, to take Jerusalem in 1099. The Poem is a heady mixture of violence and romance set in a romantic and exotic setting that proved particularly popular before the French Revolution and during the Romantic period. A splendid copy in pristine condition.

London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1827. Full calf, 9 inches tall. A splendid Victorian full calf by Hayday with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and striking red label. Gilt dentelles and all edges pink. With the leather bookplate of William Twopeny. The frontispiece and title page are heavily foxed but the rest of the text block is clean. A charming and highly detailed account of London Bridge, through the ages, embellished with 56 engraved vignettes.

London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1902. 13 volume set, 8 inches tall. A very handsome set in half Edwardian calf by Bumpus with wide gilt raised bands, centre tooling and striking twin green labels. Gilt top edges. A neat ink inscription on the first blank. With portrait and illustrations by Thackeray throughout. Now celebrated mostly for 'Vanity Fair' with the adventures in society of Becky Sharp during the period of the Napoleonic Wars. Thackeray was one of the most popular and influential of all English Victorian novelists. A lovely set in fine condition.

London: Bradbury & Evans 1854-55. 2 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A splendid full calf by Tout with gilt raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Rubbed on shoulders and some foxing, especially to the plates. Fine engraved illustrations by Richard Doyle throughout. A very smart copy of the first edition of this great Victorian novel.

First edition of this hilarious verse with comic images describing the rollicking adventures of life in The Royal Navy at sea and ashore two hundred years ago.

Very, very slight fading, otherwise pristine. Bookplates. Leather bound sets of the great Russian writers are hard to come by, especially in this condition. With an introduction by Henry James and translated by Isabel Hapgood this set contains some of the most influential novels of the 19th century.
