London: Printed at the Shakspeare Press for John Major and Robert Jennings, 1828. 5 volume set, 10 inches tall. A splendid tall set in full hard grain morocco by Clarke & Bedford, one of the greatest names of the period. With gilt raised bands and very fine extra gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt fillets, and superb gilt tooling with corner devices frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With the bookplates of William Strahan and Alfred de Rothschild. This celebrated edition has the plates in 2 states, with the proofs laid down on india paper. Slight foxing but overall a fine set of this great edition.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1903. 16 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. A handsome half morocco binding by Stikeman with gilt raised bands and elaborate centre tooling to the panels. Gilt top edges. Very, very slight fading, otherwise pristine. Bookplates. Leather bound sets of the great Russian writers are hard to come by, especially in this condition. With an introduction by Henry James and translated by Isabel Hapgood this set contains some of the most influential novels of the 19th century.

London: Charles Griffin & Co. (1865). Full morocco, 7 3/4 inches tall. A fabulously bound volume by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands and a superb stylized floral device in the panels and en masse on the boards. Gilt tooled dentelles and all edges gilt. With the leather bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Rubbing but perfectly firm. The frontispiece and 12 further images represent famous Shakesperean characters or creations. These are followed by 2 pages of illuminated text relating to the characters. We can find very few examples of this work in institutions and no other copies in the trade.

London: The Florence Press by Chatto & Windus, 1909. Full crushed morocco, 11 inches tall. A remarkable binding by J(ulius) Dratva of Vienna with large raised bands and simple gilt framed panels. The upper board shows St Francis kneeling before a winged Christ through an arch with dragon heads in the top corners. All edges have very unusual floral gilt gauffering. A gilt armorial device G.T. with a Griffin wielding an anchor and sword on the paste down endpaper. Number 191 from a limited edition of 500. An exceptional item.

London: The Punch Office, 1847-1848. Bradbury and Evans. 3 volumes, 9 inches tall. A wonderful set of the first editions of these great comic works. Bound by Bradstreet in the finest full crushed morocco with raised bands and gilt dentelles. From the Duke of Gloucester's library at Kensington Palace, each volume with his bookplate. Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester was the third son of King George V, brother of King George VI and King Edward VIII. Original wrappers bound in. With a total of 30 hand coloured engravings and over 300 woodcuts by John Leech.

London: G. Virtue, 1830. Full calf, 9.5 inches tall. A pristine copy in glorious full calf by Root with gilt raised bands, triple labels and wonderful gilt centre tools indicative of our heroes dissolute adventures in London, playing cards, Champagne bottles and dancers. The boards are framed within gilt corner tools and triple fillets. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Embellished with all 36 hand coloured aquatints from designs by Robert Cruikshank.

London: Septimus Prowett, 1825. 13 volume set, 9 inches tall. A splendid tall paper set in a magnificent hard grain morocco by one of London's most celebrated binders, Clarke & Bedford. With gilt raised bands, ornate gilt tooling to the panels and the play titles in the surely smallest type a binder could use. The boards framed within triple fillets, gilt dentelles and all edges. Some speckles to the boards. With the striking bookplate of John Wodehouse, Earl of Kimberley Foreign secretary under Queen Victoria. This collection of Elizabethan and Jacobean plays was significant in reacquainting the public with many previously neglected works. A very fine set.

London: Rivington et al., 1811. Full morocco, 12 inches tall. A spectacular binding by Bedford in full red morocco with gilt raised bands, superb floral gilt tooling to the panels and triple gilt fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With the bookplate of Joseph Spencer Graydon. With 18 magnificent woodcuts, mostly of the early English monarchs. This is the most well known work of the 16th century John Rastell, being a chronicle dealing with English history from the earliest times to the reign of Richard III. Rastell was also the first English printer of polyphonic music. A wonderful copy of this entertaining history.

London: Thomas McLean, 1822. Full morocco, 9 1/2 inches tall. This is a fabulous copy of the very scarce first edition containing all 6 parts (all published) and not the reprint of 1904. Bound in a superb later full morocco by the great firm of Morrell with gilt raised bands, sporting centre tools to the panels and a series of gilt fillets and bits as corner tools to the boards. With the armorial bookplate of George Seton Veitch. With 19 very bright hand coloured aquatints by Henry Alken and James Barenger. The Sporting Repository contains anecdotes and illustrations on many sporting subjects including 'Horse Racing, Hunting, Coursing, Shooting, Archery, Trotting and Tandem Matches, Cocking, Pedestrianism and Pugilism'. An exceptionally fine and clean copy of a much sought after title.

London: T. Tegg, 1815. Full morocco, 10 inches tall. A fabulous later tall full crushed morocco by the great firm of Bedford from the library of a Scottish Gentleman. With gilt raised bands, superb gilt tooling to the panels of the highest quality, wide gilt denteles and gilt top edge. With 30 hand-coloured aquatints, by George Cruikshank, including the title page, as called for. There is a small gouge in one of the panels, otherwise a sparking, pristine and exceptionally tall copy of this great and highly disrespectful comic work by 'Doctor Syntax'.

London: Thomas Boys, 1820. Full morocco, 10 inches tall. A wonderful tall late Victorian binding by the great firm of Bedford in pristine condition, inside and out. With gilt raised bands and luxurious floral gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt triple fillets frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edge. With an engraved title page and 12 hilarious full page hand coloured plates by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. From the library of a Scottish Gentleman. As fine a copy as one could possibly find of the first edition of this hilarious work advising much scrimping and saving.

London: Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1822. Full morocco,10 inches tall. A superlative later full morocco binding by the great firm of Bedford, from the library of a Scottish Gentleman, in pristine condition. An exceptionally tall copy with gilt raised bands, ornate floral gilt tooling to the panels, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, wide gilt dentelles and top edges gilt. With 36 hand coloured aquatints by I.R. and George Cruikshank and 3 folding pages of songs. The original paper spine and cover, and advertisements, bound in. The images illustrate the hilarious and bawdy adventures of Jerry and his companions in Regency London. A beautiful volume.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1910. Full morocco, 6 inches tall. An exquisite binding by Ramage with gilt raised bands, dense gilt tooling with tiny blue band onlays and exceptionally fine gilt tooling with extensive blue onlays to the boards. With elaborate gilt tooled dentelles on watered silk doublures and free 'end papers'. Ink inscriptions on first blank. One of the best titles in Ramage's repertoire of little luxury binding in pristine condition.

London: John Fairburn, 1822. Full morocco, 9 inches tall. A fabulous full morocco by Wood with gilt raised bands, superb gilt tooling to the panels and boards representing the gambling and fighting to be found in the text. Fine gilt dentelles and top edge. The armorial bookplate of Charles Tuller Garland and a pictorial bookplate. Embellished with 21 hand comic coloured aquatints by George Cruikshank. Some finger marks but still a super copy of the rollicking adventures of a band of young gentlemen enjoying life in Paris.

Cambridge: The University Press 1920-1927. 15 volume set, 9 inches tall. A splendid half morocco binding by Bumpus with gilt raised bands, elegant gilt tooling to the panels and all edges gilt. It is unusual to find this great work of literary reference in a fine binding. Some superficial rubbing otherwise in excellent condition.

Paris: Joseph Barbou, 1755. 2 volume set, 6 inches tall. A beautiful set bound by White of Pall Mall in pristine condition in full crushed morocco. A flat back with gilt bands and delicate tooling in the style of Derome. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Frontispiece and two folding maps. A truly delightful set in the original Latin. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

London: Macmillan, 1890, 1891. Full morocco, 10 1/2 inches tall. A stunning large paper copy in full crushed morocco bound by Riviere in 1893 in absolutely pristine condition. With gilt raised bands and exquisite floral gilt tooling to the panels. A gilt embossed ornate centre tool is framed within a series of gilt rolls and fillets on both boards. Wide gilt dentelles and gilt top edges, the remaining edges untrimmed. The original cloth wraps are bound in. Profusely illustrated by Hugh Thomson, who has signed the title page, throughout. A wonderful copy of one of the greatest comic 18th century novels.
