London: Macmillan and Co, 1914. Half calf, 7.5 inches tall. A pleasing binding by Spottiswoode with a single gilt raised band and gilt tooling in the Art Deco style to the spine and gilt top edge. With 350 illustrations by the author. From the Library of The Duke of Gloucester at Kensington Palace, and with his bookplate. An ink inscription reads 'H.R.H. Prince Henry, Honoris causa (For the sake of honour) from E.L.C.' Eton, Easter 1916'. Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester was the third son of King George V, brother of King George VI and King Edward VIII, and the first son of a British monarch to attend school.

London: John Murray, 1846. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A magnificent full morocco binding by one of the finest firms of binders in mid 19th century London, White of Pall Mall. With gilt raised bands and top rate floral gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges. There is some 'purpling' of the boards, seen often on this shade of blue, otherwise in pristine condition.

London: Bradbury, Evans, & Co., 1866. Full calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A splendid full calf by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. A double gilt fillet and corner tools frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Colour frontispiece and illustrations by Charles Keane throughout. A lovely copy of this extraordinary comic work.

London: Bell & Daldy, 1865. 6 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. An elegant half calf binding by Larkins with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt top edges. With armorial bookplate. This is a new, revised, corrected and enlarged edition.

Paris: P. Boizard, 1845. Half morocco, 10 1/2 inches tall. A fine and very bright later half morocco with gilt raised bands, floral gilt tooling to the panels and yellow edges. With the binder's ticket of Albert Günther of Vienna, and from the Library of the Auersperg Palais, though the bookplates have been neatly removed. With full page plates and vignettes throughout by '...les Artistes les plus Distingués...', illustrating the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. Slight sporadic foxing, overall a fine bright set.

London: John Murray, 1870. Full calf, 7.5 inches tall. A very fine Victorian binding by Morrell with gilt raised bands, triple labels and equine gilt centre tools to the panels. Triple gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Delicate vignettes and 14 hand tinted engravings by Alken. A smart copy of this charming work.

London: Henry Frowde, 1912. Full morocco, 8 1/2 inches tall. With the stamps of Morrell and also of Truslove and Hanson of Sloane street, luxury booksellers, book binders and acted as London agents for the State Library of New South Wales. Bound with gilt raised bands and very fine and ornate gilt tooling to the panels and boards highlighted with tiny green calf onlays. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Gordon was the first Australian poet to receive overseas recognition, though not before his tragically short life had ended.

London: Richard Bentley, 1875. 2 volume set, 8.75 inches tall. A most attractive half straight grain morocco by Howell of Liverpool. With wide gilt raised bands, ornate centre tools and gilt top edges. Extra illustrated with 48 full page plates. With the armorial bookplates of Charles Nall-Cain, Baron Brocket of Brocket Hall.

London: The Harleian Society, 1871. Full morocco, 10.5 inches tall. A superb binding by Tregaskis at the the Caxton Head with gilt raised bands, simple framed panels and boards, dentelles and top edge gilt. Slightly rubbed and a few minor scratches. Harleian Society volume V. With 2 bookplates.

A remarkable heavy mid-Victorian full crushed morocco by David Bryce of Glasgow with twin raised bands, fine gilt panels and stunning gilt tooling to the boards with a panel in relief. Gilt dentelles and superb gauffered gilt edges. With an neat small inscription dated 1864 to 'Georgie Waddell from her cousin C.M. Fenton Livingstone'. Illustrated with over 100 designs by John Gilbert, engraved by the brothers Dalziel. Some rubbing but in fine condition.

London: R. Ackermann, 1813. Half morocco, 12 inches tall. A tall, elegant half morocco by Hatchards with raised bands and gilt framed panels. Gilt top edge. Finely printed on hand-made paper with delightful engraved vignettes throughout. Slightly rubbed and scuffed.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1927. Full calf, 7 inches tall. A superb 20th century full calf by Bayntun with gilt raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. Label, twin gilt fillets to the boards, dentelles and all edges. Slight scratching to the boards. A splendid edition of some of the greatest short stories ever written.

All edges gilt. Wide gilt dentelles and silk end papers. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. A hugely popular novel originally printed in France in 1788. Bernardin's beliefs echo those of Enlightenment philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau as he contrasts the social class divisions in eighteenth-century French society with those of the noble inhabitants of Mauritius. With 330 engraved illustrations, 30 of which are full page.

London: All the Year Round Office. London, 1880-86. Half morocco, 10 inches tall. A smart half crushed morocco by Riviere with gilt raised bands and neat gilt pallets framing the panels. Top edge gilt. With a rather spectacular 'Supreme Council 33' bookplate. These 'post Dickens' numbers are quite scarce, especially bound together with all their original wrappers. A nice collection of 7 editions, 1880-1886, in excellent condition.

From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. A satire on English society and specifically the Count d'Orsay. A lovely copy.
