A very fine English edition of this French classic illustrated with 330 engravings, 30 of which are full page. Light foxing. A hugely popular novel originally printed in France in 1788. Bernardin's beliefs echo those of Enlightenment philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and he contrasts the social class divisions in eighteenth-century French society with those of the noble inhabitants of Mauritius.

Foxing to the preliminaries and a small stain in the top corner affecting the last two plays not touching the text.
