Le Virgile Travesty.
Amsterdam: R. & G. Wetstein, 1712. 2 volume set, 5.25 inches tall. A superb little set in an early 18th century half calf with raised bands, twin labels and gilt floral centre tools. Pink edges. The work is in 12 parts, each having an engraved plate, some with slightly frayed fore edges. There is an extremely faint trace of an owner's stamp on the title page. This great parody of the Aeneid was written by the extraordinary Paul Scarron, first husband of Madame Maintenon, future wife of Louis XIV.

An exceptional full hard grain morocco binding with raised bands, gilt and blind pallets and centre tools to the spine and delightful gilt tooling to the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Illustrated with 15 photographs by Cundall and Fleming. Neat ink inscription dated 1867 on the first blank. The green has faded on the spine, the boards have a faint stain and there is some slight rubbing but this scarce deluxe edition is still a most attractive volume.

Some marks and a little fading but a nice little solid copy. Two oriental tales from the 18th centuries bound together.
