London: G. Bell, 1926. Full morocco, 6.5 inches tall. A neat little volume of these great tales by one of the greatest Russian writers, translated into English by T. Keane. A fine binding by Morrell with gilt raised bands, splendid tooling to the panels and framing the boards. A slight stain to the foot of the upper board not effecting the shape or interior. Gilt dentelles and top edge.

London: Richard Phillips, 1802. 3 volume set, 6 1/4 inches tall. An exquisite full Georgian calf with gilt bands, twin labels and ornate and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Portrait and one engraved frontispiece showing 'A Scene in a Tartar Village'. Blue speckled edges. A scarce title describing the extraordinary life of this German dramatist, notoriously murdered by a liberal student. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

London: Geoffrey Bles, 1924. Half morocco, 9 1/2 inches tall. A simple though impressive half morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe with gilt raised bands and gilt framed panels. Gilt top edge. Profusely illustrated. Neat leather bookplate. A scarce first edition on the life of the outstanding character actor, and probably the greatest Russian theatrical producer and director of his day, whose influence and methods continue to this day.

Paris: Buisson, 1797. 2 volume set, 8 inches tall. A simple but good looking late 18th century 'russia' calf from the library of Lord Kinnaird of Rossie Priory. With gilt bands and titles. Some rubbing and slight splitting but still firm and solid. Embellished with 6 engraved portraits. In the original French.
