London: Printed at the Stanhope Press, by Charles Whittingham for John Sharpe, 1805. Full calf, 5 1/4 inches tall. A beautiful little Georgian binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt and blind tooling to the panels and framing the boards. A finely printed pair of volumes, bound in one, embellished with three engraved plates, an engraved title page and frontispiece. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

Shakespeare's Sonnets.
Portland, Maine: Thomas B. Mosher, 1907. Full morocco, 7 inches tall. A fine binding for Hatchards of Piccadilly with raised bands and neat and simple gilt tooling framing the panels and boards, blind 'strapping' around the bands and onto the boards. Gilt title on the upper board. Handmade paper with gilt top edge and other edges left untrimmed. The bookplate of Gwendolyn Field and neat ink inscription, dated 1918, on the first blank. The spine is faded though still bright. A good looking copy of this fine edition of Shakespeare's sonnets.

Gilt and blind fillets and corner tools frame the boards. A neat ink inscription on the first blank. A collection of Scottish Verse, 'Wrote by the Ingenious before 1600'. Slightly marked boards but overall a fine copy of this anthology.

Slight foxing to the preliminaries otherwise a neat, clean set of the poetic works of this 'charmingly humorous' lyric poet.

Armorial bookplate. Decorated throughout. Foxing to the endpapers and blanks, otherwise clean. A lengthy ink inscription on the first blank. Some rubbing and a scuff to one panels but still a lovely volume.

Oxford Prize Poems: Being a Collection of Such English Poems as have at Various Times Obtained Prizes in the University of Oxford.
Oxford: J. Parker, 1819. Full calf, 6 1/2 inches tall. A very good looking Regency full calf with wide gilt raised bands, black label and bold gilt centre tooling to the panels. A series of gilt and blind rolls, fillets and corner tooling and a blue inlaid panel create interesting panels, typical of the period, on both boards. An ink inscription, dated 1821 is found on the first blank. Slight rubbing and scuffing but still a fine copy.

The diced boards are framed within blind and gilt rolls. There is a dark patch on the upper board and a neat ink inscription dated 1810 on the reverse of the free endpaper. A splendid example of a binding of this period on a tenth edition of this celebrated poem.

A lovely little Regency binding with blind raised bands and unusual and very attractive gilt tooling to the panels and an elaborate series of gilt fillets and rolls framing the boards. Bookplate. Charming engraved frontispiece and bookplate. James Thomson, the 18th century poet now best known for writing the lyrics of 'Rule, Britannia!', was one of the most popular and influential poets of his century. A fine copy in excellent condition.
