A very bright full straight grain morocco by Maclehose with gilt raised bands, gilt pallets, double fillets framing the boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. Portrait. A small mark on the lower board, otherwise a pristine copy of the works of Shelley, one of England's great Romantic Poets.

London: William Pickering, 1847. 2 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. A very fine Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and superb gilt tooling to the panels. Twin gilt fillets frame the boards. James Thomson, the 18th century poet now best known for writing the lyrics of 'Rule, Britannia!', was one of the most popular and influential poets of his century. A fine copy in excellent condition.

London: Florence Press, 1926. Full morocco, 8 inches tall. A finely printed edition in a simple full crushed morocco by Riviere with raised bands, gilt dentelles and top edge. Light Foxing. Spine slight faded. Edited and arranged by John Sampson. Though considered mad in his own lifetime, William Blake is now considered to be one of the greatest and most influential English poets and artist of the Romantic Age, perhaps of any age.

A very neat binding by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands, framed gilt panels and ornate gilt tooling to the boards within a series of gilt fillet panels. Gilt dentelles and top edge. Before establishing himself as a very successful novelist Meredith's first emphasis was as a romantic poet, Oscar Wilde described his poetry as "chaos illumined by brilliant flashes of lightning".

Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1849. Full morocco, 9 1/2 inches tall. A rather magnificent tall heavy Victorian binding, not stinting on the gold leaf with raised bands and dense extra gilt panels. The boards have a complex series of highly ornate gilt and blind tooling. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Double column text. Foxing to the title page, otherwise clean. Hugely popular in her day now mostly remembered for two opening lines: "The boy stood on the burning deck" and "The stately homes of England".

The boards are framed within gilt and blind fillets and corner tooling. The boards are marked and stained, but a very fine looking set on the shelf. Overall a very nice set of the poetical works of this very popular Victorian poet.

A beautiful little Georgian binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt and blind tooling to the panels and framing the boards. A finely printed pair of volumes, bound in one, embellished with three engraved plates, an engraved title page and frontispiece. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

A fine binding for Hatchards of Piccadilly with raised bands and neat and simple gilt tooling framing the panels and boards, blind 'strapping' around the bands and onto the boards. Gilt title on the upper board. Handmade paper with gilt top edge and other edges left untrimmed. The bookplate of Gwendolyn Field and neat ink inscription, dated 1918, on the first blank. The spine is faded though still bright. A good looking copy of this fine edition of Shakespeare's sonnets.

Edinburgh: Constable, Miller & Murray, 1808. Full diced calf, 8.5 inches tall. A superb Regency binding with gilt and blind bands and very fine blind, gilt and inked tooling to the panels. The diced boards are framed within blind and gilt rolls. There is a neat ink inscription dated 1810 on the reverse of the free endpaper. A splendid example of a binding of this period on a fourth edition of this celebrated poem.
