A sparkling late 18th century full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands and superb extra gilt panels. Gilt fillets frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Unfortunately a long defunct insect couldn't resist taking a superficial nibble at the foot of the spine and on the upper board near the foredge, detracting from its otherwise very good condition. Fine full page engraved plates. A neat ink inscription on the third blank records ' Mrs. Scrymsoure of Tealing. The Remembrance of a very dear Friend'.

One of a limited edition of 1150 examples. Embellished with a splendid colour portrait frontispiece and monochrome plates throughout. A little foxing to the preliminaries, slight rubbing and some fraying to the foredges of a few leaves and chips to the frontispiece but still a fine example of Goupil's luxurious productions.

    Paris: Barbou, 1769. Full morocco, 6 1/4 inches tall. A very fine and bright full 18th century crushed morocco with gilt raised bands, gilt tooling around a pomegranate device in the panels, gilt twin fillets and corner tools frame the boards, gilt dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate of Abbot Jean-Baptiste L'Écuy. Pliny the Younger is mostly remembered for his Epistulae (Letters), of which 247 have survived giving a picture of life in 1st century Rome. The most famous of which describe the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 which his uncle, Pliny the Elder, died and one in which he discusses the official policy concerning Christians. A superb copy in the original Latin.

On the first blank leaf is a neat ink inscription, 'Lawrence Oliphant Octobr. 11th 1816 London.' These superb volumes contain the Victory Odes named after the Olympian, Pythian, Isthmian and Nemean games, in the original Greek. Pindar was one of the great Greek lyrical poets.

Signed at the foot 'Relié par Simier'. Simier is described thus by Ramsden 'His variety and technique were superb; he had no superior and few rivals during his career". Superb 18th century 'Country House' full calf with raised bands and splendid gilt tooling to the panels and exceptionally fine twin labels. With the splendid martial bookplate of Stewart. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. There is an ink stain to one foredge and two stains on the reverse of the frontispiece, not affecting the portrait itself, otherwise very clean internally and magnificent externally.
