    Paris: Barbou, 1769. Full morocco, 6 1/4 inches tall. A very fine and bright full 18th century crushed morocco with gilt raised bands, gilt tooling around a pomegranate device in the panels, gilt twin fillets and corner tools frame the boards, gilt dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate of Abbot Jean-Baptiste L'Écuy. Pliny the Younger is mostly remembered for his Epistulae (Letters), of which 247 have survived giving a picture of life in 1st century Rome. The most famous of which describe the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 which his uncle, Pliny the Elder, died and one in which he discusses the official policy concerning Christians. A superb copy in the original Latin.

Gilt top edges. Marie was second wife of King Henry IV and then served as regent of France between 1610 and 1617 during the minority of her son Louis XIII. Miss Julia Pardoe was an English poet, novelist, historian and traveller. Her most enduring works are her French histories which continued to be printed into the twentieth century.

Gilt top edges. The early 16th century King of France, great patron the the Arts. In his enthusiasm for the Italian Renaissance he brought many great Italian artists to France including Leonardo da Vinci. Under his reign several of the finest French Renaissance buildings were constructed including the great chateau at Chambord. Miss Julia Pardoe was an English poet, novelist, historian and traveller. Her most enduring works are her French histories which continued to be printed into the twentieth century.

    Paris: Isidore Liseux, 1879. 2 volume set, 6 3/4 inches tall. A superb half morocco by Bumpus with gilt raised bands and fine extra gilt panels and gilt top edge. The title pages are printed on vellum. Very slight wear to the joints but very solid and in a beautiful binding. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Poggio Bracciolini, writing in the 16th century is celebrated for rediscovering many classical Latin manuscripts, many otherwise unknown, from monastic libraries. He made important finds in St. Gallen, Cluny Abbey, Langres, Monte Cassino and Hersfeld Abbey, amongst many others. The texts here are in English with the original Latin in a smaller type below.

Unfortunately a long defunct insect couldn't resist taking a superficial nibble at the foot of the spine and on the upper board near the foredge, detracting from its otherwise very good condition. Fine full page engraved plates. A neat ink inscription on the third blank records ' Mrs. Scrymsoure of Tealing. The Remembrance of a very dear Friend'.

A delightful little Regency full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, blind bands and extra gilt tooling to the panels. A series of gilt rolls and blind fillets frame the gilt and blind lozenge on the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With charming little crude engraved vignettes throughout. Shoulders slightly rubbed. The Sanskrit animal fables of Panchatantra date from at least as far back as B.C.200, translated into English in the Elizabethan period and by La Fontaine in the 18th Century as the Fables of Bidpai. This had become Pilpay by the time of this edition.
