Paris: Barbou, 1769. Full morocco, 6 1/4 inches tall. A very fine and bright full 18th century crushed morocco with gilt raised bands, gilt tooling around a pomegranate device in the panels, gilt twin fillets and corner tools frame the boards, gilt dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate of Abbot Jean-Baptiste L'Écuy. Pliny the Younger is mostly remembered for his Epistulae (Letters), of which 247 have survived giving a picture of life in 1st century Rome. The most famous of which describe the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 which his uncle, Pliny the Elder, died and one in which he discusses the official policy concerning Christians. A superb copy in the original Latin.

London: Henry Colburn & Co., 1852. 3 volume set, 9 inches tall. An unusual and very elegant half crushed morocco with three raised gilt bands and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt top edges. Marie was second wife of King Henry IV and then served as regent of France between 1610 and 1617 during the minority of her son Louis XIII. Miss Julia Pardoe was an English poet, novelist, historian and traveller. Her most enduring works are her French histories which continued to be printed into the twentieth century.

A delightful little set in full crushed morocco with gilt bands, gilt tooling to the panels, twin labels, charming gilt rolls and swags framing the boards. Watered silk endpapers and all edges gilt. With no inscriptions, a pristine set of these devotional works with their original box.

The early 16th century King of France, great patron the the Arts. In his enthusiasm for the Italian Renaissance he brought many great Italian artists to France including Leonardo da Vinci. London: George Cowie, 1837. 5 volume set, 9 inches tall. A most attractive early Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and elegantly gilt tooled panels. A single gilt fillet frames the boards. There is a neat contemporary ink previous owner's name on the reverse of the paste down end paper. Portrait. Slight rubbing. A bookplate has been removed from the rear paste down end papers. A fine set of the works of this great English theologian and philosopher best known for his exposition of natural theology.

Paris: Isidore Liseux, 1879. 2 volume set, 6 3/4 inches tall. A superb half morocco by Bumpus with gilt raised bands and fine extra gilt panels and gilt top edge. The title pages are printed on vellum. Very slight wear to the joints but very solid and in a beautiful binding. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Poggio Bracciolini, writing in the 16th century is celebrated for rediscovering many classical Latin manuscripts, many otherwise unknown, from monastic libraries. He made important finds in St. Gallen, Cluny Abbey, Langres, Monte Cassino and Hersfeld Abbey, amongst many others. The texts here are in English with the original Latin in a smaller type below.

Edinburgh: Sterling, 1818. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. Full speckled calf with multiple gilt bands, twin labels and very delicate centre tools typical of this regency style. With plates and folding map. A lovely copy.

London: John Walker, 1794. 4 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. A most attractive Georgian full tree calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delightful gilt tooling to the panels. The tree calf is framed with a gilt Greek roll. Yellow edges. Loss to one headcap, some rubbing and occasional superficial loss of leather to a long defunct insect, but still a fine looking set of the poetical works of this great satirist.

Paris: Baudry, 1827. 3 volume set, 4 1/2 inches tall. A delightful little set in a splendid French full plum straight grain morocco with wide blind tooled raised bands, gilt pallets and centre tools. An elaborate blind embossed device is framed within blind and gilt fillets on the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With a neat ticket of a Bordeaux book seller. A very neat ink previous owner's name, dated 1828, on the reverse of the free end paper. Portrait. Light foxing. A fine French edition, in English, in superb condition.

London: Good of Bond Street and Harding of Pall Mall, 1794. Full morocco, 9 1/2 inches tall. A sparkling late 18th century full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands and superb extra gilt panels. Gilt fillets frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Unfortunately a long defunct insect couldn't resist taking a superficial nibble at the foot of the spine and on the upper board near the foredge, detracting from its otherwise very good condition. Fine full page engraved plates. A neat ink inscription on the third blank records ' Mrs. Scrymsoure of Tealing. The Remembrance of a very dear Friend'.

London: Company of Stationers, 1787. Full straight grain morocco, 8.5 inches tall. With gilt bands, charming cherub centre tools, simple gilt rolls framing the boards, dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate. A beautiful foredge of an English cathedral. A lovely copy with no splitting.

London: Routledge, 1869. Full morocco, 10 inches tall. A magnificent binding by RAMAGE. With gilt raised bands and fine gilt tooling to the spine, boards and dentelles. All edges gilt. With 24 colour plates printed by Leighton brothers. With a leather prize bookplate and gilt prize block on the lower board.

London: William Pickering, 1827. Full crushed morocco, 9 inches tall. A top quality binding by HAYDAY, one of the finest binders of the period. Gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and superb tooling to the boards. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Bookplate. A neat ink owner's inscription on the first blank. A fine copy of this important archival work.

London: MacMillan, 1900 & 1908. 2 volumes, 6 inches tall. A beautiful and pristine set in a full calf by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands, twin labels, fine gilt panels, dentelles and all edges. A delightful set of this classic anthology of English poems and songs.

London: Baldwin, Cradock et al., 1818. Full morocco, 6 1/2 inches tall. A delightful little Regency full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, blind bands and extra gilt tooling to the panels. A series of gilt rolls and blind fillets frame the gilt and blind lozenge on the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With charming little crude engraved vignettes throughout. Shoulders slightly rubbed. The Sanskrit animal fables of Panchatantra date from at least as far back as B.C.200, translated into English in the Elizabethan period and by La Fontaine in the 18th Century as the Fables of Bidpai. This had become Pilpay by the time of this edition.

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1889. Half morocco, 8 1/2 inches tall. An elegant, simple binding by Bayntun with raised bands and gilt top edge. Slight superficial blotchiness to the upper board and ink inscription on the first blank. A limited edition of 585 copies, on handmade paper, of which this is 367, signed by Palgrave.

Oxford: Parker, 1852. 2 volume set, 8.75 inches tall. A classic Victorian full calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Neat ink inscription and Bala College ink stamp on the first blank. A fine copy of this scarce work on the first century theologian Saint Ignatius of Antioch. In Latin.
