London: Henry Colburn, 1817. Half morocco, 13 inches tall. A smart later half morocco by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands, fine gilt tooling to the panels and all edges gilt. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Half title, additional decorative title, frontispiece, 26 aquatint plates with contemporary hand-colouring, including a folding view of the Battle of Waterloo, and 2 folding maps. The colouring is exceptionally bright and fresh. Tooley states that the frontispiece is often missing and replaced with the 'Portraits of General Officers', as in this case. Minor repair to the margins of the title page. A super copy of this classic work.

A wonderful copy of a scarce book in full Regency straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, gilt pallets, the board framed with a wide blind roll and a double gilt fillet. All edges gilt. Embellished with 27 folding hand coloured engraved plans illustrating the cavalry manoeuvers. This copy is inscribed ' from the author' and was from the library of Lord Londonderry, though without his bookplate.

A couple of very small marks otherwise a remarkably clean set, inside and out.

A magnificent set of Clarendon's great 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England', as it was originally titled on its publication between 1702 and 1704.

Roskill's masterpiece is the celebrated, official history of Britain's war at sea in the Second World War. It is still considered the definitive work on the subject and is packed with over 180 illustrations and over 150 folding maps and plans. There is some tiny loss to the bottom corner of the first volume's text block, otherwise in pristine condition.

Engraved portrait frontispieces and a further 14 engraved portraits and plans, some folding. Some rubbing and foxing but still a very handsome set which covers so many momentous naval battles and adventures.

This set is number 235 from a deluxe limited edition with the 25 plates by Joseph Grego in two states, one hand coloured. The extraordinary Captain Gronow was a dandy mixing with finest society in London and Paris, gambler, military man present at Waterloo, writer and politician. A lovely set of this fine edition.

Alexander was Captain in the British Army and Lieutenant-Colonel in the Portuguese Service, he was a traveller, soldier and author and was largely responsible for the preservation and transfer of Cleopatra's Needle to England. London: Hutchinson, (1921). Half morocco, 8 3/4 inches tall. A splendid binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe with gilt raised bands, gilt lettering and pallets and a gilt top edge. A slight stain on the left of the title. 'A handy book of reference of the deeds that have won the Victoria Cross from the date of its institution in 1856 up to the present time' (revised up to 1921), 'arranged in order of regiment or corps. The account of each act of bravery is an extract from the 'London Gazette' of the time'.
