London: The Florence Press by Chatto & Windus, 1909. Full crushed morocco, 11 inches tall. A remarkable binding by J(ulius) Dratva of Vienna with large raised bands and simple gilt framed panels. The upper board shows St Francis kneeling before a winged Christ through an arch with dragon heads in the top corners. All edges have very unusual floral gilt gauffering. A gilt armorial device G.T. with a Griffin wielding an anchor and sword on the paste down endpaper. Number 191 from a limited edition of 500. An exceptional item.

London: Printed by Bensley for Triphook, 1817. 2 volume set, 9.5 inches tall. A binding in full straight grain morocco of the highest quality attributed to C(harles) Lewis on an ancient tipped-in slip from an old catalogue. With wide gilt raised bands, exceptionally fine and dense gilt tooling to the panels and neat gilt tooling framing the boards. Superb gilt doublures. With the splendid armorial bookplate of the great bibliophile Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, whose magnificent library was housed at Kensington Palace. One of only 50 large paper sets with the woodcuts, after Thurston, being in 2 states, one on india paper. Some minor foxing.

Boston: Dana Estes, 1891. 32 volume set, 9 inches tall. A rather unusual and very good looking half morocco with gilt raised bands and splendid floral gilt tooling to the panels. A former owner's gilt monogram within a floral swag on the upper boards. Gilt top edges. The deluxe 'Warwick Edition' was limited to one thousand copies of which this set is number 264. A very popular novelist through the Victorian period today he is mostly remembered for coining the phrases "pursuit of the almighty dollar", "the pen is mightier than the sword" and "the great unwashed". A fine set profusely illustrated.

New York: Duprat & Co. 1893, 1894 & 1895. The first 3 volumes of this very rare limited edition, 7" tall. Beautifully bound by Canape in half red morocco with gilt raised bands, ornate tooling to the panels around a calf onlay. Gilt top edges. With the bookplates of Pierre Munier and I. Fernandez. With an ink inscription from the publisher on the first blank. Number 416 of 600 copies on handmade paper. The first volume has delightful coloured comic illustrations of various aspects of the book trade facing each month. The second and third volumes have fine monochrome plates. Copies of these volumes are exceedingly scarce and, especially in pristine condition and in fine bindings.

Published by New York: Duprat & Co. 1893 - 97. 5 volume set, 7 inches tall. A superb complete set of this wonderful and very scarce title in a half crushed morocco binding of the period with gilt raised bands and ornate floral gilt tooling with red calf onlays to the panels. Limited to a total of 600 copies Beautifully illustrated throughout, volume I by Henriot, volume II by Robida, the remaining volumes are more serious in tone. Volume V contains an original watercolour.

Paris: Chez Sylvian Sauvage, 1927. Half morocco, 9.5 inches tall. with raised bands and fine gilt tooling with onlays, gilt top edge. This is example V of XX lettered 'examplaires de collaboration'. With splendid illustrations by Andre Dignimont including an original watercolour signed and inscribed to Pierre Macorlan, the celebrated french novelist and songwriter.

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner, & Co., 1895. 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A wonderful full crushed morocco by Bumpus with gilt raised bands and extraordinary fine and elaborate gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Number 61 of 750 copies printed on Deckle Edge Paper, with etchings on Handmade Paper. A truly spectacular binding in pristine condition.

London: William Pickering, 1830. 4 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A beautifully bound set of the first collected edition. Full crushed olive morocco with gilt raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. Triple gilt fillets frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges gilt. 250 copies were printed (Keynes p.95). A wonderful set in pristine condition of the plays of John Webster, the English Jacobean dramatist best known for his tragedies The White Devil and The Duchess of Malfi, still frequently performed today.

London, Paris, New York: Goupil & Co., 1899. Full morocco, 12 1/2 inches tall. A sumptuous binding by Riviere in an unusual orange goat skin, with gilt raised bands and very fine extra gilt tooling to the panels and gilt roll and triple fillet framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Beautifully printed and with illustrations throughout including the colour portrait of Oliver Cromwell. One of a series of extravagantly produced, mostly Royal, biographies. Deluxe limited edition in very fine condition.

Paris: 'Disciples d'Hippocrate', 1942. Half crushed morocco, 11 inches tall. A simple binding with gilt tooled titles, fleurons and top edge. One of 250 copies on 'velin de rives', this being number 245. With 13 explicit illustrations in black and white and 12 in colour, with an extra suite of the 12 colour lithographs. A fine copy.

An excellent copy of a rare volume.
