A magnificent and most unusual French 18th century binding with a straight grain morocco binding with two green calf labels and wonderful gilt floral tooling. A superb gilt vine roll frames the boards. Lovely printed bookseller's ticket on the paste down end paper. Engraved title page and frontispiece. Pristine condition. In the original Latin. Since its first printing in 1471-2, 'The Imitation of Christ' has remained one of the most enduring and popular of all Christian devotional works.

Simple gilt fillets framing the boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. The index was published in 1746. With the armorial bookplate of Tatton Park. Slightly rubbed but with no loss or splitting. Beautifully printed in Greek and Latin. Dibdin considered this to be the most accurate and most beautiful edition of the works of Lucian, the great satirist and rhetorician.

A splendid full 18th century red crushed morocco with some rather extraordinary restoration with gilt raised bands, fine floral gilt tooling to the panels, wide dentelles and all edges gilt. The lower board has been restored with cat's paw calf decorated with a gilt fleur de lys surmounted by a royal crown. Embellished with 52 engravings, several of which are folding. From the library of Charles Whibley. Bookplate. Two manuscript letters, dated 1627 and 1671 are tipped in. This work was expanded with two further volumes in 1661 and 1673. This is a most good looking copy of this celebrated work albeit with some remarkable restoration to the lower board. In Latin.

The crushed leather of the boards is framed within 4 gilt fillets. Wide gilt and blind dentelles and all edges gilt. Slight foxing to the title page then clean. At the head of the title page is an an early inscription 'Given Mr Penn (?) by Dr. Davis, head master of Eton, on his leaving that school'. Jonathan Davies was head at Eton 1773-1792. The armorial bookplate of Andrew Irving, Assistant Master of Charterhouse is on the reverse of the free endpaper. A…

An impressive and complete set. Lucian of Samosata was a Greek Syrian satirist, rhetorician and pamphleteer who is best known for his characteristic tongue-in-cheek style, with which he frequently ridiculed superstition, religious practices, and belief in the paranormal.
