A remarkable heavy mid-Victorian full crushed morocco by David Bryce of Glasgow with twin raised bands, fine gilt panels and stunning gilt tooling to the boards with a panel in relief. Gilt dentelles and superb gauffered gilt edges. With an neat small inscription dated 1864 to 'Georgie Waddell from her cousin C.M. Fenton Livingstone'. Illustrated with over 100 designs by John Gilbert, engraved by the brothers Dalziel. Some rubbing but in fine condition.

London, Published for the Proprietors by Sherwood, c.1850 Jones, and Co. 3 volumes, 8.75 inches tall. Simply bound in half calf with gilt and blind bands and gilt titles. A charming collection of over 100 pared down plays popular in the early 19th century, each one with a delightful engraved heading. Neat ink owners name, dated 1857 on the paste-down endpapers.

Amsterdam: Elzevir ( Apud Ludovicum & Danielem Elzevirios), 1665. 3 volume set, 7.75 inches tall. A wonderful set in a full crushed morocco, unsigned but possibly by Clarke at the beginning of the 19th century. With gilt raised bands, superb gilt floral tooling to the panels. Gilt rolls, fillets and corner tools frame the boards. Fine engraved frontispiece to volume 1. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Sold at Sotheby's in December 1857. A fine set of this work by this great Roman Historian, in the original Latin.

London: Moxon, 1841. Full calf, 9.25 inches tall. With gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, label and blind and gilt rolls framing the panels. Two parts bound in one, complete. With a Sketch of his Life by Thomas Noon Talfourd, one of his executors.

London: Bogue, 1854. Full red morocco, 8 inches tall. A rather splendid full blind tooled morocco with gilt titles and all edges. With 50 wood engravings by Birket Foster and Jane E. Hay. Lacking the half title.

London: Richard Bentley, 1839. Full calf, 6.5 inches tall. A most good looking early Victorian binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling, including shamrocks, to the panels. The engraved frontispiece and title page are foxed, otherwise the text is clean. Armorial bookplate. Complete in itself but published as volume XXIII in the series of Standard Novels. A handsome copy of Lover's great tale of the Irish Rebellion of 1641.

Amsterdam: Chez Pierre Humbert, 1731. 2 volume set, 10 inches tall. A superb early 18th century full French calf with gilt raised bands, twin morocco labels and extra gilt tooling to the panels. Pink edges. Fine full page engravings throughout. Slight foxing to the title page, otherwise clean. From the library of Madame de Simiane at the Chateau de Cirey. A fine set.

London: Longman et al., Printed by Gedge and Barker, Bury, 1812. Full calf. 5.75 inches tall. A fine example of this curious and rare title. With gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, dentelles and all edges. Portrait of Shakespeare. Not signed but bound by Clarke and Bedford toward the end of the Victorian era. Expert repair to the top corner of the title page and slight stain to upper board, but overall a splendid copy.

A magnificent crushed and straight grain morocco with triple gilt and blind tooled raised bands and dense gilt tooling to the panels. The boards have a central straight grain panel framed by very fine and elaborate gilt and blind tooling. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Large Paper deluxe edition with india proof impressions of the plates by Smirke. Offsetting from the plates, otherwise clean. The armorial bookplate of William Strahan. Some rubbing and scuffing to the edges but with no splitting or loss. An exceptionally impressive example of this celebrated edition. In the original French.

Paris: chez la Veuve P. Bertrand, 1714. Full calf, 11 inches tall. Splendid full later cat's paw calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine floral gilt tooled panels. Gilt dentelles and pink edges. With 65 portraits of the French kings. Some foxing to the preliminaries. Expert repair to the title page. With the bookplates of the Marquis de Biencourt of the Château de Masfaure.

Dublin: William Curry, 1843-1844. 3 volume set, 9 inches tall. A stunning tree calf by Riviere with gilt raised bands, twin, slightly faded, labels and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. Wide gilt dentelles and top edges. Illustrated by Phiz. Bookplates. Some foxing to the preliminaries, otherwise a lovely set of Lever's Military "Our Mess" novels.

Paris: Baudry's European Library, 1833. Half morocco, 8.5 inches tall. A very finely bound volume with gilt raised bands, elaborate floral gilt tooling to the panels. Complete in one volume this is one of Baudry's classic English language editions.

London: Printed by W. Bowyer for William and John Innys, 1720. 8vo (9.25" tall). Full straight grain aubergine morocco. Wide gilt raised bands, gilt lettering to panels. Double gilt rule with small corner tools framing boards. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Wide margins and lovely woodcut head- and tail-pieces. All published. A superb copy.

London: Suttaby et al, 1812. 2 volume set, 5.25 inches tall. Lucan's epic Roman poem telling the story of the civil war between Julius Caesar and the Senate under Pompey the Great. From a larger set of "The Works of the British Poets", hence the volume numbers on the spine. In a beautiful Regency binding in full straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, gilt centre tools and blind corner tools to the panels and all edges gilt. On both boards a Grecian lyre within a wreath is framed by elaborate blind tooling. Armorial bookplate. Engraved frontispieces to both volumes. An exquisite little set.

Paris: Chez Ambroise Tardieu, 1821. 4 volume set, 8 inches tall. A delightful full mottled calf by Bayntun of Bath with gilt raised bands, twin labels and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. A wide gilt roll frames the boards. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Decorated with 8 engravings by Alexandre-Marie Colin, a student of Girodet. Slight rubbing to the edges and some light foxing. An exceptional set of this licentious novel.

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1911. Full crushed morocco, 6.5 inches tall. A handsome binding by Hatchards with raised bands, gilt and blind tooling in the Arts and Crafts style. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Finely printed on hand made paper. A handsome binding if somewhat rubbed.

Amsterdam: sumptibus Jacobi Wetstenii, 1743. 4 volume set, 11.5 inches tall. A magnificently bound set with gilt raised bands and superb gilt tooling to the panels. Simple gilt fillets framing the boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. The index was published in 1746. With the armorial bookplate of Tatton Park. Slightly rubbed but with no loss or splitting. Beautifully printed in Greek and Latin. Dibdin considered this to be the most accurate and most beautiful edition of the works of Lucian, the great satirist and rhetorician.

London: Bent, 1787. Full red calf, 6.5 inches tall. A delightful binding in pristine condition. Gilt bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are framed by a geometric roll. Two parts with separate title pages and frontispieces. An early owners inscription on the first blank. Very curious bookplate in the form of a very delicate cut out on which is a minuscule manuscript inscription. Some worming affecting 14 leaves towards the end of the first part.
