London: Henry Colburn & Co., 1852. 3 volume set, 9 inches tall. An unusual and very elegant half crushed morocco with three raised gilt bands and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt top edges. Marie was second wife of King Henry IV and then served as regent of France between 1610 and 1617 during the minority of her son Louis XIII. Miss Julia Pardoe was an English poet, novelist, historian and traveller. Her most enduring works are her French histories which continued to be printed into the twentieth century.

Gilt corner tools and twin fillets frame the prize gilt block on the upper boards. Prize bookplate on the paste down endpaper. Slight fading of the spines but still a very bright smart set by this great Irish historian.

A splendid little set of this classic history in late Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, elegant gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels. The boards have gilt and blind fillets framing the gilt prize blocks of St. Paul's school. All edges gilt. A prize bookplate on the front paste down endpapers and a further bookplate.

A splendid early Victorian full calf by Budden of Cambridge with gilt raised bands, twin labels and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. A simple gilt fillet frames the boards. With the armorial bookplate of J.F.D. Tutt. With a neat ink inscription on the first blank dated 1849. A magnificent set of Clarendon's great 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England', as it was originally titled on its publication between 1702 and 1704.

Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood, 1852. Full calf, 8 3/4 inches tall. 2 volumes bound in 1, complete. A splendid Victorian full calf binding with gilt raised bands, label and ornate extra gilt panels. Gilt and blind fillets and corner tools frame the boards. There is a neat ink inscription 'on leaving Eton', dated 1865, on the first blank. Colour frontispiece. Francesco Sforza was the great 15th century military leader who founded the Sforza dynasty in the duchy of Milan.

Paris: L. Carteret, 1910. 2 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A superb full morocco binding by Bickers with gilt raised bands and very smart gilt pallets framing the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. Original wraps bound in. With the bookplate of Alfred de Curzon, 19th century French painter. Slight foxing to the preliminaries. Madame Campan was in the service of Marie-Anoinette before and during the horrors of the French Revolution. This set is number 204 exemplaires sur papier velin du Marais. There are 63 very fine engravings by Leon Boisson from illustrations by LALAUZE. In the original French.

Paris: P. Boizard, 1845. Half morocco, 10 1/2 inches tall. A fine and very bright later half morocco with gilt raised bands, floral gilt tooling to the panels and yellow edges. With the binder's ticket of Albert Günther of Vienna, and from the Library of the Auersperg Palais, though the bookplates have been neatly removed. With full page plates and vignettes throughout by '...les Artistes les plus Distingués...', illustrating the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. Slight sporadic foxing, overall a fine bright set.

An unusual title in a Scottish presentation binding! Bookplates of the Angus Club and Dundee High School. With 12 Illustrations of English derring do, not for the politically delicate.

London: Sampson Low, Marston and Company, 1900. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A stunning half calf by 'C. Cross. Binder to the Queen'. With gilt raised bands, triple labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt top edges. Profusely illustrated with maps, battle plans, and photogravures. A late edition of this classic biography in a fine binding.

A prize bookplate is on the front paste down endpaper. With 3 maps and 2 battle plans. A scarce title especially in such a fine binding.
