Paris: P. Boizard, 1845. Half morocco, 10 1/2 inches tall. A fine and very bright later half morocco with gilt raised bands, floral gilt tooling to the panels and yellow edges. With the binder's ticket of Albert Günther of Vienna, and from the Library of the Auersperg Palais, though the bookplates have been neatly removed. With full page plates and vignettes throughout by '...les Artistes les plus Distingués...', illustrating the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. Slight sporadic foxing, overall a fine bright set.

A very smart copy of one of Prescott's great American histories.

London: Henry Colburn & Co., 1849. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. An unusual and very elegant half crushed morocco with three raised gilt bands and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt top edges. The early 16th century King of France, great patron the the Arts. In his enthusiasm for the Italian Renaissance he brought many great Italian artists to France including Leonardo da Vinci. Under his reign several of the finest French Renaissance buildings were constructed including the great chateau at Chambord. Miss Julia Pardoe was an English poet, novelist, historian and traveller. Her most enduring works are her French histories which continued to be printed into the twentieth century.

Full calf, with twin red and green labels, gilt raised bands and floral gilt tooling to panels, marbled edges and endpapers, blind dentelles. Armorial bookplates. Slightly sunned at spine. The binder has had to correct the volume number on two of the three volumes. A very good set.

This work was originally published in 3 volumes, as here, which were then extended to many more volumes over the following years. Engraved frontispiece and 2 folding plates. Some offsetting, otherwise clean. With the bookplate of Vane Londonderry. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

Gilt dentelles and top edges. Original wraps bound in. With the bookplate of Alfred de Curzon, 19th century French painter. Slight foxing to the preliminaries. Madame Campan was in the service of Marie-Anoinette before and during the horrors of the French Revolution. This set is number 204 exemplaires sur papier velin du Marais. There are 63 very fine engravings by Leon Boisson from illustrations by LALAUZE. In the original French.

VENEZIA (Venice): Giovanni Gatti, 1784. 4 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A very beautiful Italian full 18th century tree calf. With triple labels and charming gilt centre tools. Blue speckled edges. Frontispiece and engraved vignette to each title page. Sadly there is staining throughout the fourth volume which has not affected the shape or thickness of that volume or indeed of its binding. A fine Italian printing in the original language.

From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Finely printed by Humphreys on hand-made paper. Translated from "Vie des Dames", these biographies of the most influential women described in Brantôme's memoirs of the illustrious men and women whom he had known, written down towards the end of his life at the beginning of the 17th century. A fine copy in English.
