With the binder's ticket of Albert Günther of Vienna, and from the Library of the Auersperg Palais, though the bookplates have been neatly removed. With full page plates and vignettes throughout by '...les Artistes les plus Distingués...', illustrating the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. Slight sporadic foxing, overall a fine bright set.

Gilt top edges. The early 16th century King of France, great patron the the Arts. In his enthusiasm for the Italian Renaissance he brought many great Italian artists to France including Leonardo da Vinci. Under his reign several of the finest French Renaissance buildings were constructed including the great chateau at Chambord. Miss Julia Pardoe was an English poet, novelist, historian and traveller. Her most enduring works are her French histories which continued to be printed into the twentieth century.

Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery.
