With a gilt prize inscription on the upper board and prize bookplate on the first blank. Alice Stopford Green was an Irish historian and nationalist who married the English historian, J. R. Green. She was involved in the Howth gun-running of July 1914, having given Roger Casement a loan to help buy German arms.

With striking blue patterned end papers. There is some rubbing and superficial small patches of leather lost to a long defunct insect. The final 2 books were published in 1771 (see our other set). Here Volume I contains a prefix, being 'The History of the Revolutions of England from the Death of Edward the Confessor to the Birth of Henry II', Book I with its appendix. Lord George Lyttleton was an English statesman, author and landscape gardener. He was a friend and supporter of Alexander Pope in the 1730s and of Henry Fielding in the 1750s; the latter dedicated his greatest novel 'Tom Jones' to Lyttelton.

Smalley was an American journalist, most famous for his war reporting, in the United States and subsequently Europe, becoming the Times U.S. correspondent in London.
