With a gilt prize inscription on the upper board and prize bookplate on the first blank. Alice Stopford Green was an Irish historian and nationalist who married the English historian, J. R. Green. She was involved in the Howth gun-running of July 1914, having given Roger Casement a loan to help buy German arms.

From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry, and with his elaborate bookplate. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. A little scuffing, otherwise a superb copy.

With the armorial bookplate of Farnham of Quorn of Quorn Hall. Embellished with portraits and views. Some light rubbing, otherwise a fine set of this celebrated Life of H.R.H. Prince Albert, Consort to Queen Victoria.

With gilt dentelles and top edges, the remainder deckled. One of just 9 tall copies on handmade paper signed by Smalley. There is a letter from the author to the publisher, Macmillan, and also the latter's bookplate. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Smalley was an American journalist, most famous for his war reporting, in the United States and subsequently Europe, becoming the Times U.S. correspondent in London.

Armorial bookplate. 2 portrait frontispieces. Chip to the foot of volume 1. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Charles consolidated the growing Burgundian State into one continuous Kingdom upsetting several European powers and instigating the Burgundian wars in which he died in the battlefield in 1476. An exceptionally good looking set.
