    London: Bohn, 1848. Half morocco, 15 inches tall. A glorious tall copy from the library of the Duke of Gloucester at Kensington Palace. Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester was the third son of King George V, brother of King George VI and King Edward VIII. In pristine condition this copy was bound by J. Wright, one of the finest binders of the early Victorian period, with gilt raised bands, label and magnificent gilt armorial centre tools. All edges gilt. Decorated with 60 full page hand coloured plates, all dated 1811-13.

    Paris: Chez Charles Robustel, 1690-1738. 6 volume set, 10.5 inches tall. A splendid set in full speckled calf with gilt raised bands and dense gilt tooling to the panels. Speckled pink edges. The bindings have uniform tooling but were bound as the volumes were published in 1690, 1691, 1691, 1697, 1701 and 1738 and consequently the dimensions of the volumes and the shade of the leather varies somewhat. The volumes are in excellent condition with no splitting but there are a couple of bad scuffs on the boards leaving a small patch of the straw board visible. One engraved chapter heading to each volume. With the armorial bookplates of Le M(arqu)is de Champagne Giffart. This is the First Edition…

The first seven volumes were published in Waterford and are embellished with portraits and maps; the last five volumes were published in Dublin by which time the publisher's money or enthusiasm for illustration had disappeared. Volume VI also contains a Dedication to Charles Chetwynd, Earl Talbot, General Governor of Ireland. A former owner has neatly inscribed his name, W.M. A fascinating and terrifying collection of trials from ancient times but with a great emphasis on those executed in the French Revolution, the last two unfortunates being Marie-Antoinette and her sister in law Elizabeth. William Belsham was a radical historian and apologist for the American Revolution. From the library of the Earls of Lovelace, with ink-stamps of Ashley Combe on the paste down endpapers and Ben Damph Forest to the free endpaper. A remarkable set.
