Augsburg (Augustae Vindelicorum): Sumptibus ignatii adami & Francisci Antonii Veith, 1759. 6 volume set, 14.5 inches tall. Full vellum, dating from the middle of the 18th century with gilt tooled labels and unusual pink and green edges. The Codex Regularum, created in Aachen in 817, was designed by Benedict to restore the strict observation of monastic life which had been relaxed over recent centuries. Complete sets in contemporary bindings are scarce. There is some scuffing and staining to the vellum, in particular at the tails of each volume but there is no splitting and the bindings are in excellent condition. 2 bookplates. In the original Latin.

A delightful Regency full calf with gilt and inked raised bands, twin labels and exceptionally delicate gilt tooling to the panels and blind pallets. The boards are framed within gilt fillets and roll. Gilt dentelles. Illustrated with 200 splendid engraved plates by Henry Moses. Slight abrasions to the boards but overall a very fine copy. With the bookplate of M. General Sir Charles Stewart, British nobleman and soldier, the fourth son of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1845. Full morocco, 14 inches tall. A very pleasing volume with wide raised bands, extra gilt panels, splendid gilt tooling to the boards, dentelles and all edges. With 24 fine lithographs by J. D. Harding, C. Cattermole, S. Prout, W. Muller, J. Holland and other eminent Artists. This is the first edition with 2 further volumes being published in the following 2 years. There is no volume number on the spine and the volume number on the title page has been obscured.

London: Thomas Kelly, 1821, 1818. Half morocco, 8.5 inches tall. A handsome binding by Hatchards with gilt raised bands and gilt pallets framing the panels. Gilt top edge. The second edition of the Memoirs 'revised, augmented, and improved. Ornamented with interesting engravings'.

A splendid Georgian binding with gilt raised bands, a series of pallets framing the panels and elaborate gilt rolls and corner tooling on the boards. All edges gilt. Engraved portrait and title page. Two bookplates. Slight fading to the spine, overall a superb little edition of the works of this great Roman lyric poet. In the original Latin.

Paris: Calmann-Lévy, 1880. Full calf, 9 inches tall. A fine binding with gilt raised bands, elegant centre tools to the panels and and gilt oval centrepiece within gilt panels to the upper board. Some foxing and speckling to the boards. The first edition of this long philosophical poem.

London: George Bell, 1892. Half morocco, 7 inches tall. A very neat half morocco by Sotheran with gilt raised bands, Aldine Leaf centre tools and gilt top edge. A charming copy of the poetical works of this great 17th century devotional poet.

With a Rugby school gilt prize block on the upper board and prize bookplate. 10 plates. A stirring account of the adventures of Admiral Blake, one of the greatest English military commanders of the 17th century, in a very smart binding.

London & Edinburgh: Cadell & Blackwood, 1839. 7 volume set, 6.75 inches tall. Full hard grain morocco with wide gilt raised bands, gilt lettering dentelles and all edges. The panels are framed by blind pallets. The portraits and engraved title pages are hand coloured. Bookseller's tickets. A delightful set of the works of Felicia Hemans, the most considerable woman poet of the Romantic period.

London: John Rivington et al, 1779. 2 vols., 8vo (7" tall). Full calf. Raised bands, exceptionally bold centre tools in elaborate gilt panels and twin red and green labels. Minor expert restoration to one head cap and slight splitting to the joints of volume 1, but still firm and a most attractive copy.

London: Nimmo, 1885. 2 volume set, 9.25 inches tall. Full crushed morocco by Ramage, one of the great binders of the period. A smart, though simple, binding with gilt raised bands, gilt framed panels and boards. Gilt top edges and dentelles. Slightly rubbed. Armorial bookplates. With 64 portraits, engraved by Edward Scriven.

London: Saunders & Otley, 1836. Full morocco, 9 inches tall. An exceptionally finely tooled volume by Wright 'a binder of the highest order' (Ramsden, London Book Binders). With gilt raised bands, dense gilt tooling to the panels and extraordinary elaborate tooling to the boards. Slightly sunned spine and some foxing, severe on a few pages. An anthology of British poetry illustrated by the artists of the period.

With gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, dentelles and all edges gilt. Bookplate and the neat stamp of Bostonian collector Charles S. Dixwell on the reverse of the front free endpapers.

Paris: Joseph Barbou, 1775. Full calf, 6.5 inches tall. A delightful 18th century calf binding with gilt bands, labels and floral gilt tooling to the panels. The mottled calf boards are framed by simple gilt rolls. All edges gilt. Frontispiece and woodcut ornaments.

London: Onwhyn, (1822-1824). 4 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. A most attractive set of this rare and entertaining periodical. Half calf with gilt bands, finely tooled panels and labels. Slightly rubbed and scuffed. In 118 parts. The last dated December 29th 1824. The first part only is 'second edition'. With engraved title pages and illustrations. By the second part the title has become: The Hive, or Weekly Register of Remarkable Events, in Domestic Occurrences, Literature, the Arts, and Manufactures, the Drama, Public Exhibitions, Life and Manners.

A most sumptious binding from the early Victorian period with gilt raised bands, dense gilt tooled panels. finely gilt boards, dentelles and all edges. A anthology of verse by the greatest British poets of the period, illustrated by some of the most illustrious artists. As is usually the case with this edition there is foxing, some severe, throughout.
