Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1849. Full morocco, 9 1/2 inches tall. A rather magnificent tall heavy Victorian binding, not stinting on the gold leaf with raised bands and dense extra gilt panels. The boards have a complex series of highly ornate gilt and blind tooling. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Double column text. Foxing to the title page, otherwise clean. Hugely popular in her day now mostly remembered for two opening lines: "The boy stood on the burning deck" and "The stately homes of England".

Paris: Morizot, 1863. Full red morocco, 10 1/2 inches tall. A spectacular binding by Jean-Baptiste Tinot with gilt raised bands and delicate gilt tooling with green calf onlays to the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. First edition with 20 steel engraved portraits with somewhat browned tissues. This work celebrates the lives of 20 famous 18th century women, including Madame de Pompadour, Madame du Chastelet and Marie-Antoinette. With a couple of marks to the binding and a little foxing to the plates but overall a fine and impressive binding. In the original French.

London: Vernoe and Hood et al., 1804. Full morocco, 10 3/4 inches tall. A beautiful copy bound at the beginning of the 19th century with twin raised bands and fine and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are framed in a splendid series of gilt rolls and fillets. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Embellished with 24 full page engravings. A sparkling tall copy of this classic law book which includes "Historical and Descriptive Sketches Relative to their Original Foundation, Customs, Ceremonies, Buildings, Government, &c. &c. With a Concise History of The English Law".

London: Gulielmus Pickering, 1831. 2 volume set, 4 1/8 inches tall. A wonderful full crushed morocco by Holloway. With raised bands, blind pallets and gilt Aldus leaves in the panels. The boards have a blind panel with gilt Aldus leaves as corner tools. Gilt dentelles and all edges. A delightful small set printed by William Pickering with miniscule type, in the original Greek.

London: Printed by W.J. Sears, c.1828. Full calf, 6 1/4 inches tall. A beautiful little embossed calf binding by Wesley (with their stamp at the foot of the upper board), with floral blind tooling and gilt lettering to the spine and ornate blind tooling to the boards. All edges gilt. A neat ink inscription dated 1843 on the front free end paper. Engraved frontispiece, title page and 4 further plates. A lovely copy in excellent condition.

London: Moxon, 1860. 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A most attractive mid Victorian full calf binding by Nelson with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt tooled panels. Twin gilt and a single blind fillets frame the boards. Vignettes. A fine set of this amusing work on the life of the early 19th century poet and humorist Thomas Hood.

A fine looking set of the first and second series in a handsome Victorian half calf by Sotheran with gilt raised bands, twin labels and neat floral gilt tooling to the panels. Portrait and engraved vignettes throughout. A clean and bright set of this great English comic author's 'collection of wit and humour'.

A beautiful full morocco by Ramage with gilt raised bands, delicate, tiny gilt tooling to the panels and boards with a multitude of stars and flowers. Gorgeous gilt dentelles and watered silk doublures and free end paper. All edges gilt. From the Golden Treasury Series. A delightful little binding of great quality in pristine condition.

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1854. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A very smart mid-Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, beautifully gilt tooled panels and twin labels. Two gilt fillets frame the boards. Maps. A neat inscription dated 1864 "on leaving Eton" is written on the first blank. An important and scarce history translated from the original German.

New York: Duprat & Co. 1893, 1894 & 1895. The first 3 volumes of this very rare limited edition, 7" tall. Beautifully bound by Canape in half red morocco with gilt raised bands, ornate tooling to the panels around a calf onlay. Gilt top edges. With the bookplates of Pierre Munier and I. Fernandez. With an ink inscription from the publisher on the first blank. Number 416 of 600 copies on handmade paper. The first volume has delightful coloured comic illustrations of various aspects of the book trade facing each month. The second and third volumes have fine monochrome plates. Copies of these volumes are exceedingly scarce and, especially in pristine condition and in fine bindings.

Blind fillets and corner tools frame the boards. The armorial bookplate of John Arkwright. A splendid copy of Hallam's 'View of the state of Europe during the Middle Ages'.

Liverpool: Brown, Barnes & Bell, 1878. 2 volume set, 16 1/2 inches tall. A huge and spectacular morocco binding by the great Victorian bookbinders of Liverpool, Fazakerley. A binding of the highest quality, perhaps an exhibition piece, with gilt raised bands and ornate gilding to the panels and boards, incorporating liver birds, floral flourishes and pallet work, framed within twin fillets. All edges gilt and fine gilt dentelles. The endpapers are also a delight, involving more liver birds, urns and floral designs. Embellished with 72 plates. A charming and nostalgic look at the lost buildings and areas of Old Liverpool in excellent condition, inside and out.

London; Henry G. Bohn, 1849. Full morocco, 7 1/2 inches tall. A splendid full crushed morocco by Tout with gilt raised bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels and triple fillets and floral corner tools framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. Armorial bookplate. Born in Ireland, Hamilton fled to France and fought alongside James II, he wrote in a fine and elegant French style. This work is an English translation of 'The Four Facardins'; 'Zeneyda'; 'The Story of May-Flower'; 'The Ram'; and 'The Enchanter Faustus'.

Edinburgh: Robert Cadell, 1834. 3 volume set, 6 inches tall. An extraordinary full hard grain morocco with unusual gilt tooling to the smooth back and flamboyant gilt tooling to the boards. All edges gilt. Third Series. Slight foxing to the 3 frontispieces, otherwise clean. Fading to the spines, especially to the first volume. An ink inscription first blank reading: 'H.J. Coleridge from H.G. Hulse Eton. May 1841.' Followed in pencil by: 'Died at Messina June 1. 1851 and a Latin quotation.
