    Paris: Chez Charles Robustel, 1690-1738. 6 volume set, 10.5 inches tall. A splendid set in full speckled calf with gilt raised bands and dense gilt tooling to the panels. Speckled pink edges. The bindings have uniform tooling but were bound as the volumes were published in 1690, 1691, 1691, 1697, 1701 and 1738 and consequently the dimensions of the volumes and the shade of the leather varies somewhat. The volumes are in excellent condition with no splitting but there are a couple of bad scuffs on the boards leaving a small patch of the straw board visible. One engraved chapter heading to each volume. With the armorial bookplates of Le M(arqu)is de Champagne Giffart. This is the First Edition…

A superb collection of the first English edition of these great works translated by Dr. Smollett. 18th century runs in English are scarce, in this condition exceptionally so. Full speckled calf with gilt bands, triple labels and gilt centre tools. This edition was expanded to 38 volumes in 1774. An engraved frontispiece to each volume excepting volume 25, 2 folding plates in volume 26. Each volume has the neat ink inscription 'Mr G.F.Edwards Surgeon Bath' on the first blank. From the Library and with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst. the late 18th century Edwards was a member of the Royal College and writer and surgeon in Bath.

This would appear to refer to General Robert Melvill, inventor of the carronade and Governor of Guadeloupe. A superb set of Bishop Horne's most celebrated work.
