An extraordinarily bright and colourful binding by the Paris bindery Trautz Bauzonnet in full crushed morocco with gilt raised bands and floral gilt tooling to the spine. The boards and doublures are elaborately gilt tooled with floral onlays. Top edge gilt. Embellished with colour frontispieces, full page plates and vignettes. Classic work in a fabulous binding.

Turner, Thomas Stothard, and others. These titles are frequently found in fine bindings of the period and these are of a particularly high quality.

Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame).
Paris: Garnier Freres, 1844. Full morocco, 10.5 inches tall. A splendid 'Gothic' binding with raised bands and blind tooling to the panels and boards. There is a recessed panel with vellum onlays on both boards with 'Paris 1844' on the lower board and 'a slightly smudged 'Victor Hugo. Notre Dame de Paris' on the upper, both with fine caligraphic flourishes. Blind dentelles and all edges gauffered and gilt. With an armorial bookplate. This is the first issue with these illustrations comprising engraved title and 54 engraved plates. In the original French. A fine edition of this classic French novel in a suitably sombre binding.

Paris: Saugrin, L'An V. - 1797. 2 volume set, 6 inches tall. An exquisite full straight grain morocco by C. Lewis with twin blind tooled bands, beautiful gilt tooling to the panels, dentelles and all edges. The straight grain of the boards is framed within a frame of gilt and blind tooled fillets. Bookplate. 8 glorious copper engravings by Moreau le Jeune and a frontispiece portrait of La Fontaine after Rigeau. Slight rubbing to the head and tail cap and boards, and slight fading to the spine but a beautiful set of this delightful and scarce work from the original tale by Ovid, retold by La Fontaine.

Gilt dentelles and top edges. With red and black title pages, 17 etched plates by Cruikshank and Leech and 2 engraved portraits. The original cloth covers and spines bound in. A nasty scuff on the fore corner of the 3rd series but still a super set of first editions of this fantastical work.
