Wide gilt dentelles and top edge. Illustrations by Cruikshank. The original paper wrappers bound in. Armorial bookplate and 2 catalogue entries for this copy tipped in. Albert Ludwig was not related to Jacob and Wilhelm, the Brothers Grimm. Slight split to the head of the spine but still a superb copy of a very rare item.

Edited by Howard Staunton and illustrated with engravings by John Gilbert. Slightly rubbed but overall a super copy of this celebrated edition.

London: Dilly, 1793. Full straight grain morocco, 9.5 inches tall. A fine example of the work of one of the greatest bookbinders of the late 18th century, with his bookplate. With his typical twin gilt raised bands, triple fillet framing the boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. Portraits.

London: Akerman (sic) et al., 1822. 2 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. Superb later crushed morocco by Bayntun with gilt raised bands, gilt panels, framed boards, dentelles and all edges. With 12 hand coloured aquatints. A pristine copy of this great mock heroic Civil War poem through the story of Sir Hudibras and his comic adventures.

The Leadenhall Press Limited, 1897. Full morocco, 11 inches tall. A fabulous full morocco by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands, and very fine gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Finely gilt tooled dentelles and all edges. Silk endpapers. Though the binding is still firm there are cracks running the length of the spine on both boards. Limited to 1050 copies of which this is number 362.

London: R. Ackermann, at the Repository of Arts, 1822. Full morocco, 9 1/2 inches tall. A beautiful binding by Riviere, expertly rebacked retaining the earlier boards. With gilt raised bands, fine gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges gilt. The armorial bookplate of Baron de Spon. In this great comic poem we learn of the adventures of Doctor Syntax's extraordinary son, Johnny. Thomas Rowlandson adds 24 superb hand coloured aquatints to illustrate those adventures further.

Leiden: Elzevier, 1643. Full morocco, 5 1/2 inches tall. Fine example in a later (c.1820) superb full straight grain navy blue morocco by Simier, the Royal Binder with 'Simier R. du Roi' at the foot of the spine. Simier is described thus by Ramsden 'His variety and technique were superb; he had no superior and few rivals during his career". With Gilt raised bands and delicate blind and gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are framed within a gilt fillet and blind roll. Gilt dentelles and all edges. The bookplate of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jn.. First published in Paris in 1641, this is the first Leiden edition. In French. Very fine condition inside and out.

London: George Bell, 1896. Full morocco, 7 1/2 inches tall. A pristine full crushed morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in his own distinctive design and from his library. With raised bands, a single gilt star to the spine and a gilt key motif on the upper board. The binding, which dates from 1969 has the following pencil inscription in William Russell Flint's own hand on the paste down endpaper: "Board of education South Kensington. National Book Prize awarded to William Russell Flint of Edinburgh Royal Institution School of Art for success in subject 9a at the National arts Competition 1900". A unique and lovely copy of this profusely illustrated and informative work.

Some expert minor paper restoration done at the time of this sumptuous binding Gilt dentelles and top edge. 'A new edition, considerably enlarged and improved'. Illustrated with 3 colour plates and numerous black and white plates and vignettes.

Edinburgh: Printed by Hunter Blair and M.S. Bruce, 1830. 2 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall in sparkling William IV full straight grain morocco by J. Shearer of Stirling. With gilt raised bands and very ornate and unusual gilt tooling to the panels. A series of gilt fillets and rolls frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. There is a neat ink inscription dated 1844 on the first blank. The text block and binding are exceptionally clean and bright.

A wonderful full straight grain morocco in exceptional condition with gilt bands and simple late 18th century gilt tooling to the panels and a single gilt fillet framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. This is the complete first edition, with later editions expanded to 6 volumes. Embellished with 4 hand coloured folding maps. This charming work 'comprehends' tours taken by Moritz, Twiss, Johnson, Pennant, amongst many others. There are a few small marks but the set is otherwise pristine indicating that it has spent no time in any traveller's pocket since publication. The set is housed in a modern open front cloth box.

A splendid example of the work of Hammond, a similar work by him is found in the British Library collection of British Bookbindings. With deep gilt raised bands, gilt on green calf inlays in the panels and on the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges.
