Paris: Barbou, 1769. Full morocco, 6 1/4 inches tall. A very fine and bright full 18th century crushed morocco with gilt raised bands, gilt tooling around a pomegranate device in the panels, gilt twin fillets and corner tools frame the boards, gilt dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate of Abbot Jean-Baptiste L'Écuy. Pliny the Younger is mostly remembered for his Epistulae (Letters), of which 247 have survived giving a picture of life in 1st century Rome. The most famous of which describe the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 which his uncle, Pliny the Elder, died and one in which he discusses the official policy concerning Christians. A superb copy in the original Latin.

A beautiful French full straight grain morocco binding from the very beginning of the nineteenth century in the Romantic style with wide gilt raised bands and exquisite blind and gilt tooling to the spine and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Engraved frontispiece. From the bookplate of the noted collector Sir David Lionel Salomons. A delightfully bound edition of this tragic tale from Greek mythology in pristine condition.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1871. Full morocco, 7 1/4 inches tall. A stunning full morocco with gilt raised bands and extra gilt panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With the arms of Baron Saye and Sele in the top panel and their coat of arms on the lower board. On the upper boards is the coat of arms of Winchester College. A prize bookplate is on the front paste down endpaper. With 3 maps and 2 battle plans. A scarce title especially in such a fine binding.

London: Rivington et al., 1815. 3 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A rather splendid Regency full 'Russia' calf binding with gilt raised bands and dense blind tooling to the panels. A gilt fillet and wide blind roll frame the boards. Rubbing to the shoulders but perfectly firm. This scarce work was 'intended as an accompaniment to Dr. Russell's History of Modern Europe'. A bright and clean set in a classic Regency binding.

Paris: Librairie L. Conquet, 1893. Full morocco, 7 inches tall. A superb binding by (Pétrus) Ruban, dated 1899, with gilt raised bands, fine gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Wide gilt dentelles and all edges. With the bookplate of Daniel Henry Holmes. With a delicate hand coloured title page and further illustrations by Louis Morin. From a limited edition of 500 copies. In the original french.

London: Longman, Orme, Brown, green & Longmans, 1838. Full morocco, 9 1/2 inches tall. A terrific full morocco binding by J. Wright of Noel Street, Soho, who was one of the greatest London book binders of the period. With gilt raised bands, extra gilt tooling to the panels, flamboyant gilt tooling in the French style to the boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. With splendid full page engravings under the supervision of Charles Heath. With the leather bookplate of W.A.Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey which has somehow adhered to the free endpaper tearing a small section away. Dublin born poet Thomas Moore is today mostly remembered for his Irish Melodies.

Paris: Desessart, 1844. 2 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A very fine binding by Pétrus Ruban in full crushed morocco with gilt raised bands, exquisite gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. With the bookplate of Daniel Henry Holmes. A stunning copy of the first edition of this set of literary criticism and biographies by the flamboyant French poet, dramatist, novelist and art and literary critic, in pristine condition. In the original French.

London: Oxford University Press, 1912. Full morocco, 7 1/2 inches tall. An elegant, most good looking binding signed by Morrell and by Truslove and Hanson of Sloane Street who were luxury book sellers, book binders and acted as London agents for the State Library of New South Wales. Bound in full crushed morocco with gilt raised bands and very fine and delicate gilt tooling to the panels and boards with tiny green calf onlays. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Portrait. One blank has been neatly removed. Gordon was the first Australian poet to achieve considerable recognition overseas, though his tragically short life ended before he was able to enjoy this.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1897. Full morocco, 6 1/2 inches tall. A delightful binding by Bumpus with gilt raised bands and exquisite gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. With a neat ink inscription on the first blank and slight rubbing. Parallel Old French and English text. This anonymous medieval Old French love story from the 12th or 13th century combines both prose and verse and has appealed to generations over the centuries.

A splendidly bound volume with gilt raised bands, very fine gilt tooling to the panels and exceptionally ornate gilt tooling framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. From the library of Dalton Hall and from the Hayhurst collection. Bookplate. A well printed and handsomely bound copy of one of the most influential 18th century English poems.

London: John Templeman, 1841. Full morocco, 6 3/4 inches tall. A delightful little binding in fine full crushed morocco with gilt raised bands and delicate floral gilt tooling to the panels. All edges gilt. Triple gilt fillets and floral corner tooling frames the boards. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Extra-illustrated with 52 fine engraved plates. Hazlitt is considered one of the greatest critics and essayists in the history of the English language.

London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1896. Full morocco, 7 inches tall. A beautiful binding in full crushed morocco by Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands and superb field sport centre tools framed in the panels. The same centre tools adorn the boards around an ornate decorated panel. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate. Charming frontispiece and vignettes by Charles Whymper. A fine copy of one of Jefferies works in which the great English naturalist depicts various aspects of English rural life.

Philadelphia & London: Lippincott, 1926. Full morocco with slipcase, 10 inches tall. A luxurious binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe Zaehnsdorf with gilt raised bands, twin labels, gilt tooled panels, gilt dentelles and watered silk doublures. All edges gilt. With leather trimmed and felt lined slipcase. Still the classic work on the fascinating history of English inns in extraordinary binding.

London: Routledge, Warne and Routledge, 1862. Full morocco, 9 inches tall. A splendid Victorian binding by Hayday with raised bands and dense and elaborate gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Wide gilt rolls frame the boards. Engraved throughout. A degree of foxing. From the Library and with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst. An interesting anthology in a fine example of this type of binding.

London: Griffin, 1860. Full red morocco, 9.25 inches. A sparkling mid Victorian binding with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and all edges gilt. With bookplate and an ink inscription on the first blank 'on leaving Eton' dated 1865. Text in double columns. A fine copy of these enchanting works.

A delightful little set in full crushed morocco with gilt bands, gilt tooling to the panels, twin labels, charming gilt rolls and swags framing the boards. Watered silk endpapers and all edges gilt. With no inscriptions, a pristine set of these devotional works with their original box.

Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1840. Full morocco, 7.5 inches tall. A most attractive binding in exceptional condition with extra gilt tooling to the spine and boards and all edges gilt. The contributions include Edgar Allen Poe's 'William Wilson' and Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Justice and Charity'. With all 9 engraved plates. A neat small square patch has been pasted to a corner of the front free endpaper, presumably to cover up a previous owner's name and a stamp has been obscured at the head of the title page. A superb example of this celebrated annual.
