Oxford: The University Press, 1852. Full calf, 9 inches tall. A very handsome binding with gilt raised bands, fine gilt framed panels and gilt prize block of Rugby School on the upper board. Foxing to the preliminaries, then perfectly clean. A neat ink inscription on the first blank, Rugby School 1857. First printed in 1677, the Dukes were Scottish nobles who led successful campaigns during the Thirty Years War.

London: Bickers and Sons, 1864. 4 volume set, 9 inches tall. A classic Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, elaborate gilt tooling to the panels and densely tooled labels. The prize block of Rugby School is on the upper boards and a neat ink inscription is on the reverse of the free endpapers dated Midsummer 1865. Offsetting facing the portrait frontispiece, otherwise perfectly clean. A splendid set of all of Shakespeare's works including his Sonnets.

London: John Murray, 1858. 7 volume set, 7 inches tall. A most attractive Victorian full calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt panels. Gilt corner tools and fillets and a blind fillet frame the boards. A couple of edges are badly scuffed, otherwise in fine condition. Philip Henry Stanhope, 5th Earl Stanhope, Viscount Mahon was a politician, antiquarian and historian, this history of England being his greatest work.

Slightly marked boards but overall a fine copy of this anthology.

Frontispiece and engraved vignette to each title page. Sadly there is staining throughout the fourth volume which has not affected the shape or thickness of that volume or indeed of its binding. A fine Italian printing in the original language.

A bookplate has been removed from the rear paste down end papers. A fine set of the works of this great English theologian and philosopher best known for his exposition of natural theology.

An engraved frontispiece and vignette to the tittle page. A neat ink inscription from the period on the first blank reading 'Mifs Laura Longman. A reward of Merit'. Some marks and a little fading but a nice little solid copy. Two oriental tales from the 18th centuries bound together.

A delightful little Georgian full calf binding with gilt bands and elaborate gilt panels and an ornate gilt fillet framing 'PRIZE' on the upper board. The armorial bookplate of Thomas Clugas. Engraved frontispiece and title page. Some rubbing to the binding but no splitting or loss. Containing 'A Life of Virgil', 'Pastoral', 'The Georgics', and 'The Aeneid'. Publius Vergilius Maro, known as Virgil in English was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period and this English translation by Dryden is still considered the best.

With a neat ink inscription on the first blank "Emily Westmacott....1845". Some scuffing to the edges but overall a particularly attractive set, published in the great romantic poet's lifetime.

Scelte Commedie. (Selected Comedy).
Padova: Zanon Bettoni, 1811, 1812, 1817. 6 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A beautiful set in full cat's paw calf with gilt raised bands, delicate gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels. The boards are framed within a pair of gilt fillets. Contains the bookplate with the inscription “Philosophemur" (let us philosophise), which belongs to Dr. James Musgrave. He owned many books worthy of note, including the later ownership of Sir Isaac Newton's personal library. Carlo Goldoni was perhaps the greatest Italian playwright and librettist of the 18th century, famed for his wit and comedic style. He wrote in Italian and French making much use of his native Venetian language. In the original Italian.
