All edges gilt and dentelles on large squares. With the bookplate of Alfred de Rothschild. Embellished with 152 woodcuts and 29 line engravings, as called for. Slight blotchiness on the labels and boards, overall a wonderful volume of one of Dublin born, Anna Brownell Jameson's, great art histories.

London: T. Cadell, 1827. 4 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A splendid Georgian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels including finely tooled volume labels and highly ornate extra gilt panels. Portrait. A celebrated history of the second son of Lorenzo de Medici, the Magnificent. Leo, born Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, was Pope in the early sixteenth century. He was a highly cultured and artistic man although his virtues as the leader of the Catholic Church are debated to this day. A very good looking set.

London: John Murray, 1847. 3 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A very good looking Victorian full calf binding with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and twin labels, the volume label being particularly ornate. Some rubbing but overall a most handsome binding. This fine set does not have the bookplates but it has come from the library of Alfred de Rothschild. Covering the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries this classic work by Henry Hallam is still considered the definitive work on the subject.

A very good looking Victorian full calf binding with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and twin labels, the volume label being particularly ornate. Some rubbing but overall a most handsome binding. This fine set does not have the bookplates but it has come from the library of Alfred de Rothschild. Covering the period from the Accession of Henry VII to the Death of George II, this work has long been considered a classic on the subject.

Portrait. A celebrated biography of the great 15th century Italian statesman, ruler of the Republic of Florence, Politician, banker and the most important patron of the Italian Renaissance sponsoring Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo amongst many others. A very good looking set.

London: John W. Parker, 1847. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A splendid set from Alfred de Rothschild's library (but without the bookplate) in classic Victorian full calf in pristine condition. With gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt panels. Twin fillets and tiny corner tools frame the boards. The remarkable English polymath, William Whewell, scientist, natural philosopher and theologian, was an important and influential figure still recognized today, partly from his skill as a neologist, coming up with such terms as scientist, physicist, linguistics, consilience, catastrophism, uniformitarianism, and astigmatism and, with Michael Faraday, such words as electrode, ion, dielectric, anode, and cathode. An impressive set.

London: Richard Bentley, 1868. 2 volume set, 8 inches tall. A beautifully bound set of this classic work in full calf by Zaehnsdorf. With gilt raised bands, triple red labels and fine gilt floral tooling to the panels. Twin gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards. With the armorial bookplate of Fitz Roy Keith Chapman and Beeleigh Abbey. With 5 maps. A fascinating read covering the defeat of the Spanish Armada and colonization of North America as well as some of England's greatest Explorers and Naval heroes, including The Cabots, Frobisher, Gilbert, Raleigh, Davis, Drake, Hawkins, Cavendish amongst many others.

London: Hutchinson & Co., 1907. Full calf, 8 1/2 inches tall. A shining binding by Bayntun with gilt raised bands, twin labels and neatly gilt framed panels. Gilt fillets framing the boards, dentelles and all edges. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. With 17 plates and extra-Illustrated with several engraved portraits. A lovely copy of this history of frolicking and intrigue at the 17th century French court of the Sun King.

Edinburgh: Constable and Co., 1820. 12 volumes bound in 6, 7 inches tall. A delightful set bound in beautiful full diced 'Russia' calf with wide gilt raised bands and superb Regency gilt panels. A floral gilt fillet frames the boards. Portrait. With the armorial bookplate of James Beveridge Duncan of Damside and a neat ink gilt inscription from the period: "the Hon'ble E.G. Lake from her affec. uncle". There are a couple of minor marks to the headcaps and slight foxing but overall a fine set of the first collected edition of Scott's Poetical Works which became hugely popular throughout the Western World.

An entertaining account of the Restoration of the monarchy and life of King Charles II. A sparkling copy.

An entertaining work in a lovely binding.

Twin gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards, Gilt dentelles and top edge. Slight fading to the spine, otherwise pristine. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. A typically luxurious printing on hand-made paper by Humphreys. This is one of the tall scarcer titles in this great series.

Translated from "Vie des Dames", these biographies of the most influential women described in Brantôme's memoirs of the illustrious men and women whom he had known, written down towards the end of his life at the beginning of the 17th century. A fine copy in English.

Charles consolidated the growing Burgundian State into one continuous Kingdom upsetting several European powers and instigating the Burgundian wars in which he died on the battlefield in 1476. An exceptionally good looking set.

A minor stain runs along the foredge of the plates. A handsome set of the works of Oliver Goldsmith, the great Anglo-Irish novelist, naturalist and poet.
