Bristol: W. Richardson, 1828. Full blue calf, 5 1/2 inches tall. A delightful William IV diced calf on a very scarce title, we could only locate 2 examples of any edition in institutions. This copy is in remarkable condition with gilt raised bands, blind centre tool framed with gilt corner tools and a darker blue label. The dicing on the boards is framed within an ornate little gilt fillet. Bristol imprint. With the neat ink inscription "Mary Ann Marks. Aug. 1828 á Jesse" on the second blank. A little foxing on the engraved title page, otherwise clean. Some neat pencil underlining and highlighting.

London: How and Parsons, 1842. 2 volume set, 7 inches tall. Full calf extra gilt by Riviere. With gilt raised bands, twin labels, fine floral tooling to the panels, wide dentelles and gilt top edges. With frontispieces and title pages by George Cruikshank. With the cloth boards and spines bound in. A superb copy in pristine condition.

London: Ackerman, Walker and Co., et al, 1822. 2 vols., 8vo (8 1/2" tall). Full pink calf by J. ATKINSON, Spurriergate, York and with their ticket. Twin labels with attractively arched volume lettering. Gilt raised bands, fine floral tooling to panels. Very pretty gilt and blind floral roll, framing blind star-shaped floral motif to both boards. 12 superb hand coloured engravings. Gilt dentelles, edges marbled. Slightly sunned on spine, otherwise a fine set.

London: Routledge, 1869 & (1872). 2 volumes, 7.5 inches tall. Superb full calf bindings by Tout with triple labels and elegant gilt tooling to the panels. With gilt dentelles and all edges. Original cloth covers bound in. Slight rubbing to the joints and a stain on the top of the second title page, otherwise perfectly clean. Profusely illustrated throughout. Sir William Schwenck Gilbert, English dramatist, librettist, poet and illustrator best known for the fourteen comic operas produced with the composer Arthur Sullivan.

London: John Murray, 1854. 3 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A classic mid-Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels, and ornate gilt tooling on the panels. Blind corner tools and twin fillets frame the Trinity College Dublin embossed prize plate. Prize bookplates on each front paste down endpaper. A very good looking set of this celebration of the great English Poets by Samuel Johnson.

Rodwell and Martin, and Colburn, 1820. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. Full early Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin olive labels and exceptionally fine gilt tooling to the panels. The boards are marked and scuffed but with no splitting. A rather splendid, though somewhat worn, set of this important and scarce work.

London Baldwin and Becket, 1784. 4 volume set, 7 inches tall. A simple but elegant full 18th century tree calf with red label and gilt pallets and volume numbers. Portrait. Bookplate of Ellen James. Foxing facing the portrait and at the end of volume 4, otherwise a clean set. A curious work, rarely found in fine condition by philosopher, composer and writer, Rousseau, who was one of the most influential philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment.

Edinburgh: Ballantyne et al., 1809. Full calf, 10 1/2 inches tall. A superb Regency binding in full 'Russia' with the gilt and blind tooling so typical of the period. Gilt raised bands and dense gilt and blind tooling to the panels and boards. With an armorial bookplate bearing the motto: Vincit Amor Patriae. There is a neat ink inscription on the reverse of the front free endpaper dated 1814.

Oxford: University Press, 1925. Full calf, 7 3/4 inches tall. A sparkling copy in full calf by Riviere with gilt raised bands and extra gilt tooling to the panels. The boards have fine gilt tooling adorning a large onlayed panel. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Bookplate. A lovely volume of the poetry of the great romantic poet who died tragically at the age of only 25.

London: John Murray, 1863. 3 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A sparkling Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, triple labels and ornate gilt panels. Yellow edges. Armorial bookplate. 2 portrait frontispieces. Chip to the foot of volume 1. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. Charles consolidated the growing Burgundian State into one continuous Kingdom upsetting several European powers and instigating the Burgundian wars in which he died in the battlefield in 1476. An exceptionally good looking set.

London: H.Moses, 1817. Full calf, 11 inches tall. With raised bands, labels, decorated gilt spine and boards, dentelles and top edge. Bound by Burgess of Ramsgate in 1940 (at the cost of one pound five shillings). With 24 superb engravings by Henry Moses and one folding plan of Ramsgate Harbour. There is a degree of foxing, some fraying to a couple of title pages with no loss and a small professional repair to the plan of Ramsgate Harbour, again with no loss. An unusually tall and handsome copy of this difficult title.

Paris: Chez Prault pere, 1758. 10 volume set, 6 inches tall. A most attractive set in full speckled calf with gilt bands, twin labels, fine floral gilt tooling to the panels and pink edges. An early, revised and augmented, edition of this great French dramatist's works published just 4 years after his death.

London: John Murray, 1903. 4 volume set, 8.75 inches tall. A splendid Edwardian full calf by Morrell with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine floral gilt tooling to the panels. Slight fading to the spines and some foxing facing the plates. Here the original 2 volumes have been extended to 4 with the original 20 plates and an additional 91 plates.

London: Rivingtons, 1874. Full calf, 11 inches tall. A tall 'Divinity' or 'Oxford' calf binding in pristine condition with raised bands, well defined inked tooling to the panels and boards, gilt centre tools and a bold red label. Red edges. Double column. An exceptional example of this scarce and comprehensive work.

London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1764-1769. 3 volume set, 9 inches tall. 18th century full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt panels. The boards are framed within a gilt roll. There is a little cracking of the joints but still perfectly firm and solid. A previous owner's ink stamp, B.Girlie, is at the head of the title pages. A handsome set of the first collected edition of the works of this English poet, who was also one of the earliest practitioners of landscape gardening.

London: Charles Griffin and Company, 1852. Full calf, 6.5 inches tall. A simple but elegant binding by Bayntun Riviere with gilt raised bands, twin labels and floral gilt panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges. The 'Complete Edition' with fine engraved illustrations. A splendid copy of this delightful and scarce edition of these brilliant, haunting poems.

London: Richard Phillips, 1802. 3 volume set, 6 1/4 inches tall. An exquisite full Georgian calf with gilt bands, twin labels and ornate and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Portrait and one engraved frontispiece showing 'A Scene in a Tartar Village'. Blue speckled edges. A scarce title describing the extraordinary life of this German dramatist, notoriously murdered by a liberal student. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

Embossed gilt 'Rugby School' on the upper boards and a neat ink presentation inscription on the first blank. With 2 rather large hand coloured maps. A splendid example of the second, revised edition.

A single gilt fillet frames the boards, With bookplate of Ellen James. A little rubbing but overall a perfectly firm and solid set of this scarce English language edition.
