This set for 'young travellers in France' has an engraved frontispiece, 13 views, a folding map of France and 87 maps of the departments of France. All the maps are hand coloured on outline. A long defunct insect has nibbled at a few boards, the worst example is on the lower board of the first volume, which can be viewed in one of the images. Lord George Lyttleton was an English statesman, author and landscape gardener. He was a friend and supporter of Alexander Pope in the 1730s and of Henry Fielding in the 1750s; the latter dedicated his greatest novel 'Tom Jones' to Lyttelton.

A remarkable work purporting to be the travels of a Chinese explorer in Europe 100 years in the future. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. A splendid example of this rare and fantastical work.
