With gilt raised bands, labels, fine and ornate gilt tooling to the panels and triple gilt fillets framing a 'Cambridge Panel' on the boards. Gilt top edges, the remainder deckled. Minor rubbing and marking. Edited by Geoffrey Keynes. Though neglected in his life time he has become probably the most influential English romantic poets. Blake's poetry, painting and printmaking exert a powerful influence to the present day.

A wide gilt roll, gilt and blind fillets and corner tools frame the boards. Fine engraved frontispieces, title pages and full page illustrations by Phiz throughout. Though not a complete set of Lever's works this is a beautifully bound collection of 10 of his most popular novels, individually published, in 17 volumes. In his day the Irish novelist, Charles Lever, was hugely popular and influential and his rollicking style is still enjoyed.

    London: Bell and Daldy, 1871-72. 5 volume set, 7 1/4 inches tall. A sparkling Victorian full calf by Bickers with gilt raised bands, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. The boards have twin gilt fillets and corner tools framing a remarkable gilt prize block. Prize bookplates. In his lifetime Humboldt was one of the most famous men in Europe and academies elected him to their membership, the first being The American Philosophical Society. He was a German polymath, geographer, naturalist, explorer, and proponent of Romantic philosophy and science. 'Kosmos' was Humboldt's work bringing together all the research from his long career, It is rarely found in a finely bound set in English.

There is some foxing throughout, as usual with this edition, particularly to the preliminaries of the first volume.
    Provenance: From the residual library of Charles Butler of Warren Wood in Hatfield, purchased at Sotheby's 7/7/1853.

Gilt dentelles and top edge, the remaining edges untrimmed. An exceptionally clean and tall copy, being untrimmed. This volume does have the very rare leaf of advertisements but lacks the half title, which could be explained by the fact that it is in a later binding and that it was discarded, or could indicate it is not a true first. Slight splitting to the head and foot of the upper board but still perfectly firm and solid. A very nice copy of this great play.
