    Paris: Baudry, 1843. 4 volume set, 11 inches tall. A stunning full calf binding in a most unusual orange by 'J. White. Relieur. 24 Pall Mall. 1850'. With gilt raised bands, superb gilt tooling to the panels and a triple fillet framing the boards, gilt dentelles and all edges. The boards are slightly scuffed with the occasional stain spot but still a remarkably handsome set bound by one of the greatest binders of the period. There is some foxing throughout, as usual with this edition, particularly to the preliminaries of the first volume.
    Provenance: From the residual library of Charles Butler of Warren Wood in Hatfield, purchased at Sotheby's 7/7/1853.

There are earlier editions of Selections from La Fontaine's Tales but this is the first complete edition in English and as such is highly sought after. With 40 full page engraved plates. A beautiful set of the works of this great 17th century French fabulist and poet.

    London: T. Becket, 1781. Full calf, 9 inches tall. A very fine binding by Riviere with gilt raised bands, delightful gilt floral tooling to the panels and triple gilt fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edge, the remaining edges untrimmed. An exceptionally clean and tall copy, being untrimmed. This volume does have the very rare leaf of advertisements but lacks the half title, which could be explained by the fact that it is in a later binding and that it was discarded, or could indicate it is not a true first. Slight splitting to the head and foot of the upper board but still perfectly firm and solid. A very nice copy of this great play.

His adventures in search of his wandering father and then his return to Ithaca where he found that Odysseus had returned home before him…
