    Paris: Chez l'auteur, 1771. Full calf, 10 1/2 inches tall. A handsome 18th century full mottled calf with raised bands, gilt floral tooling to the panels, red label and red edges. There is a chip to the headcap and the boards are rubbed but still firm, the corners are bumped and there is a stain to the lower parts of the binding not effecting the plates. With the armorial bookplate of Vane Londonderry. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. Sporadic foxing and, as occurs so often with heavy russia boards there are some splits to the joints, which, though fragile, are still firm and solid and look excellent on the shelf. Decorated with 170 fine full page engraved plates, some folding and several vignettes. This extraordinary work includes Walpole's Fugitive Pieces, Noble Authors, The Castle of Otranto, Description of Strawberry Hill, Anecdotes of Painting etc., Catalogue of Engravers and his Letters.

Gilt dentelles and top edge, the remaining edges untrimmed. An exceptionally clean and tall copy, being untrimmed. This volume does have the very rare leaf of advertisements but lacks the half title, which could be explained by the fact that it is in a later binding and that it was discarded, or could indicate it is not a true first. Slight splitting to the head and foot of the upper board but still perfectly firm and solid. A very nice copy of this great play.

With the armorial bookplate of Sir Edmund Antrobus of Antrobus Hall. The first 3 volumes have engraved frontispieces. Originally conceived as a 4 volume set, it was eventually completed in 6. 'Night-Thoughts' was one of the most popular poems of the century and was published across Europe, influencing Goethe and Burke, amongst many others.
