An exceptionally good looking Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and intricate gilt tooling to the panels. A wide gilt roll, gilt and blind fillets and corner tools frame the boards. Fine engraved frontispieces, title pages and full page illustrations by Phiz throughout. Though not a complete set of Lever's works this is a beautifully bound collection of 10 of his most popular novels, individually published, in 17 volumes. In his day the Irish novelist, Charles Lever, was hugely popular and influential and his rollicking style is still enjoyed.

The History of Greece.
London: T. Caddell, 1822. 10 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A very smart country house set in full Georgian blue straight grain calf with wide gilt raised bands and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. There is an armorial device on the boards, framed within a wide blind roll and twin gilt fillets. With the Fothergill bookplate of the library from which the books were recently dispersed. Although perfectly smart on the shelf and with no splitting and with a clean text, many of the boards have evidence of being nibbled by long defunct insects. An early octavo edition in a very good looking, though blemished, Georgian full calf binding.

A very fine full calf by Robson & Kerslake with gilt raised bands, fine floral gilt tooling to the panels, twin labels, dentelles and all edges gilt. Bookplate. Some wear to the joints, especially the upper joint of the first volume but still solid. The text block is spotless. There are earlier editions of Selections from La Fontaine's Tales but this is the first complete edition in English and as such is highly sought after. With 40 full page engraved plates. A beautiful set of the works of this great 17th century French fabulist and poet.

The Critic, Or A Tragedy Rehearsed A Dramatic Piece in three Acts as it is performed at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane.
London: T. Becket, 1781. Full calf, 9 inches tall. A very fine binding by Riviere with gilt raised bands, delightful gilt floral tooling to the panels and triple gilt fillets framing the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edge, the remaining edges untrimmed. An exceptionally clean and tall copy, being untrimmed. This volume does have the very rare leaf of advertisements but lacks the half title, which could be explained by the fact that it is in a later binding and that it was discarded, or could indicate it is not a true first. Slight splitting to the head and foot of the upper board but still perfectly firm and solid. A very nice copy of this great play.
