One of several French editions of The Pirate published in the same year as the first (1822). Dargan notes that our edition (published in December) was preceded by the edition for the collected works (February) and that an unauthorised anonymous translation (Le Pirate, ou les Flibustiers) also appeared in February.

This collection includes the 1st and 2nd series of Meditations of which a 3rd volumes was published later. In the original French.

Tours: Maison Alfred Mame et fils, c.1900. 4 volume set, 5 inches tall. A delightful little set in full crushed morocco with gilt bands, gilt tooling to the panels, twin labels, charming gilt rolls and swags framing the boards. Watered silk endpapers and all edges gilt. With no inscriptions, a pristine set of these devotional works with their original box.

Paris: Lerouge & Petit, 1806. 4 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. An exceptionally pretty half morocco set from the beginning of the 19th century with gilt bands, finely tooled panels and label. Portrait. A most attractive set, in the original French. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses.

Paris: P. Boizard, 1845. Half morocco, 10 1/2 inches tall. A fine and very bright later half morocco with gilt raised bands, floral gilt tooling to the panels and yellow edges. With the binder's ticket of Albert Günther of Vienna, and from the Library of the Auersperg Palais, though the bookplates have been neatly removed. With full page plates and vignettes throughout by '...les Artistes les plus Distingués...', illustrating the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. Slight sporadic foxing, overall a fine bright set.

Quarter calf with gilt bands, twin labels and charming gilt tooling to the panels.First edition in French of Anne of Geierstein; or, the Maiden of the Mist (Edinburgh, 1829), which though separately issued also formed part of the Oeuvres complètes, as stated on the half-titles.

Geneva: Paschoud, 1802. 5 volume set, 6.75 inches tall. A fine binding of the period in quarter calf with gilt raised bands, gilt tooling to most panels and splendid blind tooling to the other.First edition in french of Lafontaine's popular novel Leben eines armen Landpredigers.

Paris: Gibert Jeune Librairie d'Amateurs, 1938. 4to (10½" tall). Full blue crushed morocco. Splendid 1930's French binding with a series of wide bands each bearing a letter of the title. Coloured calf inlay and gilt tooling on the upper board. Top edge gilt.

Londres (London, but probably Geneva, 1771. Full calf, 8 inches tall. A superb 18th century full calf with gilt raised bands, red label and fine floral gilt tooling to the panels. Speckled boards and pink edges. With the bookplate of Vane Londonderry. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Avignon: Girard, 1761. Full calf, 7 1/2 inches tall. Full 18th century mottled calf with gilt raised bands, label and fine floral gilt tooling to the panels. Pink edges. Although the binding is still perfectly solid there is rubbing, creasing, loss to the bottom panel and a defunct worm hole on the upper board. With the rather splendid bookplate of The Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire and the neat ink signatures of 2 previous owners on the title page.

Paris: Chez Chasseriau, 1823. Full straight grain morocco, 8 inches tall. Gilt raised bands, titles, fine gilt floral panels, gilt and blind tooled boards, dentelles and pink endpapers. All edges gilt. Portrait. A very elegant copy in pristine condition.

Paris: La Combe, 1766. 2 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. A splendid full 18th century mottled calf with twin labels, gilt bands and fine gilt floral tooling to the panels. FIRST EDITION of a lively miscellany of definitions icluding: Americains, amour conjugal, pantomimes, ruses de guerre and sourds et muets. Lacombe also composed the first dictionary of Old French.

Mahon: Gilles Lanlois,1756. 3 volume set 6.5 inches tall. Fine full mottled calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt floral centre tools. Pink edges. Frontispiece and woodcut ornaments. Slight damage to the headcap of volume 1 otherwise in superb condition. A lovely set of this very rare title.

Paris: Didot, 1806. 2 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. An elegant English Regency binding with gilt raised bands, very finely gilt tooled panels and gilt fillets and fleur de lis corner tools. All edges gilt. Engraved plates. Slight fading but still a superb set. From the library of Edward Vernon Utterson, famed collector and one of the 18 original members of the Roxburghe Club. Sold at Sotheby's 22nd April 1852. In the original French.

Paris: Curmer, 1858. 2 volume set, 10.5 inches tall. A simple but pleasing mid 19th century full vellum with gilt bands, dentelles and all edges gilt. Each page decorated with wide lithographic borders. With the gilt stamp of 'Schafer of Piccadilly', purveyors of luxury items. A fine set of this classic Christian guide based on the monastic practice of devotional reading by the 'Gentleman Saint'.

Paris: Charles Warée, 1844. Half morocco, 10 1/2 inches tall. A fine and very bright later half morocco with gilt raised bands, floral gilt tooling to the panels and yellow edges. With the binder's ticket of Albert Günther of Vienna, and from the Library of the Auersperg Palais, though the bookplates have been neatly removed. Embellished with 30 splendid full page engravings by Gavarni, Th. Frère, Émy, Guérin and Ed. Frère illustrating the distinctive features and manners of the various races and nationalities of the Parisian visitors and inhabitants. With engraved vignettes throughout. There is sporadic light foxing and slight staining to the border of some plates but generally bright and clean.

Paris: L. Carteret, 1910. 2 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A superb full morocco binding by Bickers with gilt raised bands and very smart gilt pallets framing the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. Original wraps bound in. With the bookplate of Alfred de Curzon, 19th century French painter. Slight foxing to the preliminaries. Madame Campan was in the service of Marie-Anoinette before and during the horrors of the French Revolution. This set is number 204 exemplaires sur papier velin du Marais. There are 63 very fine engravings by Leon Boisson from illustrations by LALAUZE. In the original French.

Bruxelles: Dumont, 1835. 3 volumes, bound in 2 complete, 6 inches tall. A pretty little set in full vellum with twin labels and sparkling gilt tooling to the spine. Blue speckled edges. A previous owner's neat ink inscription on the half titles reading: G.H. Gladstone (?) Rome April 1839. Engraved plates. A lovely little set by one of the great woman writers and political theorists of her time, in the original French.
