Superb cat's paw calf bound by Clarke & Bedford, one of the best firms of binders in London with gilt raised bands and splendid floral gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt dentelles and all edges gilt. Engraved vignettes and full page plates throughout. Armorial bookplate. In the original French.

Paris: 'Disciples d'Hippocrate', 1942. Half crushed morocco, 11 inches tall. A simple binding with gilt tooled titles, fleurons and top edge. One of 250 copies on 'velin de rives', this being number 245. With 13 explicit illustrations in black and white and 12 in colour, with an extra suite of the 12 colour lithographs. A fine copy.

Paris: Javal et Bourdeaux, 1928 & 1929. 3 volumes in paper and glassine wraps housed in 2 boxes, 14 inches tall. Number 26 of 60 copies on 'Japon Imperial'. With 30 plates by Jean Oberlé in two states and with an ORIGINAL watercolour. In an extra suite are 60 etchings by Louise Ibels, all signed and a further ORIGINAL watercolour. The two wooden boxes are leather bound with gilt titles, and heavily padded and lined with watered silk. The title page is dated 1928 whereas the wrapper is dated 1929. I believe these were publisher's copies. The boxes are slightly rubbed but fully functioning, the contents are pristine.

Paris: Javal et Bourdeaux, 1931. Text and 2 extra suites housed in 2 boxes, 14 inches tall. Number 23 of 60 copies on 'Japon Imperial'. With 30 colour plates by Dignimont in the main text. With a further suite of his illustrations in monochrome. There is also an ORIGINAL watercolour by Dignimont. With a further suite of 30 original etchings by Courbouleix, each is in 2 states, monochrome and sepia. The 30 sepia etchings are all numbered and signed. The two wooden boxes are leather bound with gilt titles, and heavily padded and lined with watered silk. I believe these were publisher's copies. The boxes are slightly rubbed and the main box lacks a popper, but they both still function., the contents are pristine. A unique set.

Paris: Chez Ambroise Tardieu, 1821. 4 volume set, 8 inches tall. A delightful full mottled calf by Bayntun of Bath with gilt raised bands, twin labels and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. A wide gilt roll frames the boards. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Decorated with 8 engravings by Alexandre-Marie Colin, a student of Girodet. Slight rubbing to the edges and some light foxing. An exceptional set of this licentious novel.

Cologne: Nicolas Schouten, 1690. Full mottled calf, 6.5 inches tall. A splendid late 17th century full calf with raised bands and fine gilt panels. There appears to be a Royal cypher at the foot of the spine but it is difficult to identify. This is the first edition of a very scarce pro-Jansenist work. From the Library and with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst.

Paris: Chez l'Auteur, & Defrelle & Petit, 1806. 2 volume set, 7.5 inches tall. An exquisite full calf by Bumpus with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine gilt floral tooling to the panels. With gilt dentelles and all edges. Armorial bookplate. Portrait frontispiece and engraved plate in 3 states in volume one and frontispiece and 2 vignettes in volume two. A very fine copy of this scarce work by this celebrated French ballet dancer, choreographer, composer and playwright.

Paris: Audot, 1822. 2 volumes complete, 8 inches tall. A most attractive set in half speckled calf with gilt pallets, large blue labels and delicate gilt centre tools. Armorial bookplate. Yellow edges and interesting endpapers. With 36 engraved plates. Described by Thiebaud (522) " Un des livres de chasse les plus agréablement illustrés de cette époque". In the original French.

Paris: Garnier Freres, 1844. Full morocco, 10.5 inches tall. A splendid 'Gothic' binding with raised bands and blind tooling to the panels and boards. There is a recessed panel with vellum onlays on both boards with 'Paris 1844' on the lower board and 'a slightly smudged 'Victor Hugo. Notre Dame de Paris' on the upper, both with fine caligraphic flourishes. Blind dentelles and all edges gauffered and gilt. With an armorial bookplate. This is the first issue with these illustrations comprising engraved title and 54 engraved plates. In the original French. A fine edition of this classic French novel in a suitably sombre binding.

Paris: Saugrin, L'An V. - 1797. 2 volume set, 6 inches tall. An exquisite full straight grain morocco by C. Lewis with twin blind tooled bands, beautiful gilt tooling to the panels, dentelles and all edges. The straight grain of the boards is framed within a frame of gilt and blind tooled fillets. Bookplate. 8 glorious copper engravings by Moreau le Jeune and a frontispiece portrait of La Fontaine after Rigeau. Slight rubbing to the head and tail cap and boards, and slight fading to the spine but a beautiful set of this delightful and scarce work from the original tale by Ovid, retold by La Fontaine.

Paris: Ménard et Desenne, 1816. 2 volume set, 8 1/4 inches tall. A splendid half mottled calf with gilt bands, centre tools and titles. A limited edition of which this set is numbered 223. There is an ink smudge on the title page of volume 1, otherwise the set is pristine inside and out. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry, and with his elaborate bookplate. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. He amassed magnificent libraries in his various Country Houses. A very fine set of a scarce work.

Pink edges. Fine full page engravings throughout. Slight foxing to the title page, otherwise clean. From the library of Madame de Simiane at the Chateau de Cirey. A fine set.

Paris: Libraire de Charles Gosselin, 1843-44. 4 volume set, 10 1/4 inches tall. A fine and very bright half morocco with gilt raised bands, floral gilt tooling to the panels and yellow edges. With the binder's ticket of Albert Günther of Vienna, and from the Library of the Auersperg Palais, though the bookplates have been neatly removed. With 47 splendid wood-engraved plates and 34 steel-engraved plates and very numerous vignettes by Daumier, Staal, Daubigny, Célestin Nanteuil and others.. An exceptionally clean and fine set of the first illustrated edition of this fascinating work.

Gilt raised bands, fine gilt framed panels, dentelles, all edges and superb gilt tooling to the boards. 25 illustrations by Ad. Lalauze. With the bookplate of Daniel Henry Holmes. One of 250 examples printed on papier d'Arches out of a limited edition of 500. A spectacular example of a culturally important work. In the original French.

A very fine 18th century binding in full citron straight grain morocco with a series of gilt bands, triple labels and dense blind tooling to the panels.
