Batavorum Lugdunum: Elzevir, 1640. Full crushed morocco, 4.75 inches tall. A delightful little volume in a sumptuous binding with gilt bands and floral tooling to the panels, dentelles, triple gilt fillet to the boards and all edges gilt. With wonderful gilt stamped endpapers. Voluptuous engraved title page. There were two first editions, this being the larger without the dedication from Vossius to Bielke but with summaries of the contents of each book. With the Bookplate of the Hayhurst Collection.

Geneva: Paschoud, 1802. 5 volume set, 6.75 inches tall. A fine binding of the period in quarter calf with gilt raised bands, gilt tooling to most panels and splendid blind tooling to the other.First edition in french of Lafontaine's popular novel Leben eines armen Landpredigers.

Paris: Chez Chasseriau, 1823. Full straight grain morocco, 8 inches tall. Gilt raised bands, titles, fine gilt floral panels, gilt and blind tooled boards, dentelles and pink endpapers. All edges gilt. Portrait. A very elegant copy in pristine condition.

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1776. 2 volume set, 11 inches tall. Splendid full 18th century speckled calf with raised bands, gilt pallets and label. Some scuffing to the boards. A slip 'To Lieut General Melvill at John Balfour's Esq in the Advocate's Close Edinb.' is enclosed. This would appear to refer to General Robert Melvill, inventor of the carronade and Governor of Guadeloupe. A superb set of Bishop Horne's most celebrated work. From the library of the Farquharson family at Invercauld Castle.

Gilt triple fillets and corner tools frame the boards. With the armorial bookplate of the great collector Cecil E Byas and a Sotheran bookseller's ticket. Profusely illustrated with full page engravings by Phiz. First edition. A fine copy of one of this Irish novelist's most amusing novels.

With over 50 comic vignettes by Leech.

Rubbed on shoulders and some foxing, especially to the plates. Fine engraved illustrations by Richard Doyle throughout. A very smart copy of the first edition of this great Victorian novel.

Paris: Ollendorff, 1897. Half crushed morocco by Durvand, 7.5 inches tall. With raised bands, label and gilt top edge. The foredge has not been trimmed, causing a rather eccentric effect with some leaves extending about an inch further than others, a deluxe style of the period. There is an inscription from the author to an A.M.R. Rolo. A lovely. copy.
