Full crushed morocco with gilt titles in a panel decorated above and below and with gilt tooling to the boards. All edges gilt. 120 engravings. All edges gilt. Engraved plates. Slight fading but still a superb set. From the library of Edward Vernon Utterson, famed collector and one of the 18 original members of the Roxburghe Club. Sold at Sotheby's 22nd April 1852. In the original French.

Paris: Carrington, 1906. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A handsome set with raised bands, delicate gilt tooled panels and top edges. Limited to one thousand copies and published in Paris due to its somewhat racy contents. Sometimes known as 'The Pleasant Nights' or 'The Facetious Nights', these 16th century fables and tales contain several of the first appearances of fairy stories still that are still familiar today.

Paris: Baudry's European Library, 1839. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A handsome half calf with raised bands, label and gilt pallets. Slightly rubbed and with a degree of foxing throughout, typical of Baudry's somewhat inferior paper quality, but still a solid good looking set. The same year as the first English edition.

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1906. 2 volume set, 9 1/4 inches tall. A most elegant Edwardian half morocco by Bayntun Riviere with gilt raised bands and simple gilt framed panels. Gilt top edges the remaining edges untrimmed. Slight foxing. A fine copy of one of Humphreys' fine printings on hand made paper.

London: Nunn et al., 1818. 2 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A handsome set of this influential work in half calf with gilt raised bands and beautifully gilt tooled panels. Some scuffing to the boards. With a previous owner's name 'Mr Moon' neatly written in ink on the paste down end paper.

Twin gilt fillets frame the boards. James Thomson, the 18th century poet now best known for writing the lyrics of 'Rule, Britannia!', was one of the most popular and influential poets of his century. A fine copy in excellent condition.

Triple gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. Steel engravings after designs by G. Staal. From the library of Alfred de Rothschild. Very slight occasional foxing. 'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane' was an early eighteenth century picaresque novel, popular all over Europe and translated into English several times, most famously by Tobias Smollett as as 'The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane'. Here in the original French.

Gilt and blind rolls frame the prize 'Elizabeth Regina' block. A neat ink previous owners name is written on the first blank. An entertaining work in which '...Anecdotes, Biography, and History, Curiosities of Literature and oddities of human Life and Character' are listed on each day of the calendar.

With the little pale green tickets of 'Folthorp. Royal Library Brighton'. The preliminaries including the frontispieces and title pages are foxed, otherwise clean. Leigh Hunt was a highly influential critic and poet who introduced the poetry of Keats, Shelley, Browning and Tennyson to the public. He was immortalised by Louis Édouard Fournier in his painting of Shelley's funeral on the beach at Viareggio.
