A splendid full calf binding with gilt raised bands, simple gilt 'Aldine Leaf' centre tools, elegant panels to the boards, gilt dentelles and gauffered edges. A neat ink inscription 'Rebecca Sutherland 1855' on the first blanks. This, the third edition, is revised and considerably enlarged by the author's son, R.H.Evans.

London: John W. Parker and Son, 1857. 2 volume set, 9 inches tall. A very handsome mid-Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt panels. Fourth edition. Twin gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards. A neat ink inscription dated 1859 is to be found on the first blank. Superbly bound by Nichols in full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and dense gilt tooling to the panels. Top edge gilt, the other edges untrimmed. 'This edition is strictly limited to 1000 numbered copies, 500 of which are for America'. This copy unnumbered. A fascinating work by the team of Leonard Smithers and Harry Sidney Nichols, celebrated printers and publishers of erotic and pornographic volumes.

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1903. 2 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. A superb full crushed morocco binding for Hatchards. With raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels and boards. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1856. 8 volume set, 8.75 inches tall. A classic Victorian half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and very impressive regal gilt tooling to the panels. This 'Popular' edition is illustrated throughout with full page and vignette engravings. Some rubbing and scuffing but a good looking set with no splitting or loss.

London: Cooke, 1797. 3 volume set, 5 1/2 inches tall. Beautiful 18th century tree calf with gilt bands, twin labels and delightful gilt tooling to the panels. Slightly marked endpapers, otherwise pristine. Bookplate. Embellished with engraved frontispieces, title pages and full page plates. The plates dated 1797. This extraordinary dark satire spawned many imitations. From the library of Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third Marquess of Londonderry. Vane served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. A pristine set of this fascinating anthology covering, in chronological order, biographical information on more than 250 British poets.

London: Sewell, Longman et al., 1801. 7 volume set, 7 1/4 inches tall. A beautiful full Georgian speckled calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and gilt centre tools. The boards are framed within a delicate gilt fillet. With the bookplate of Ellen James. This set looks superb on the shelf but does have condition issues. A long defunct insect has nibbled at a few boards, the worst example is on the lower board of the first volume, which can be viewed in one of the images. The letters of Madame de Sévigné are revered in France as one of the great works of French 17th century literature. In English.

A delightful set in full Georgian straight grain morocco with gilt raised bands, fine gilt tooling to the panels, blind and gilt rolls and fillets framing the boards, dentelles and all edges gilt. The armorial bookplate of The Honourable Henry Ayers. There is a shelf reference at the head of the title pages, slight rubbing and the a warping of vol. VI indicating that the set has been tied up with string probably for an auction lot. A very pretty set.

Paris: Libraire de Charles Gosselin, 1843-44. 4 volume set, 10 1/4 inches tall. A fine and very bright half morocco with gilt raised bands, floral gilt tooling to the panels and yellow edges. With the binder's ticket of Albert Günther of Vienna, and from the Library of the Auersperg Palais, though the bookplates have been neatly removed. With 47 splendid wood-engraved plates and 34 steel-engraved plates and very numerous vignettes by Daumier, Staal, Daubigny, Célestin Nanteuil and others.. An exceptionally clean and fine set of the first illustrated edition of this fascinating work.

With a gilt prize inscription on the upper board and prize bookplate on the first blank. Alice Stopford Green was an Irish historian and nationalist who married the English historian, J. R. Green. She was involved in the Howth gun-running of July 1914, having given Roger Casement a loan to help buy German arms.

A splendid half morocco by Riviere with gilt raised bands, 'hunting, shooting and fishing' gilt centre tools to the panels and gilt top edges. Bookplates. With a total of 33 plates. Inscribed by the author to his brother. Subscriber's special copy. These entertaining reminiscences contain the first recorded appearance of the phrase "like a duck to water".......I always took to shooting like a duck to water.

London: Dodsley, 1774. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A very smart early Victorian half morocco with raised bands, blind pallets and centre tools and gilt top edges in fine condition. This is the second edition, printed in the same year as the first. The title page and portrait are quite browned and there is a little sporadic foxing but overall a clean text in a fine binding. The 4th Earl of Chesterfield was an English statesman, wit and man of letters. These letters to his son were intended as a guide for achieving success in the 18th century, helping him to interpret the social codes of etiquette and good manners.
