A neat ink previous owner's inscription dated, 1891, on the first blank. All edges gilt. A splendid and comprehensive list of the English poets from Geoffery Chaucer to Dante Gabriel Rossetti in excellent condition.

Edinburgh: Stirling & Slade et al., 1820. 7 volume set, 8 1/2" tall. A classic Regency full calf binding with gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt tooling to the panels. A simple gilt fillet frames the boards. Red speckled edges. Engraved portrait. Somewhat rubbed and scuffed, but overall a handsome set of the works of this 18th century writer.

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1849. 2 volume set, 7 inches tall. A very smart little set in a Victorian half calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and a straight grain embossed on the spines. A folding frontispiece. With a previous owner's neat ink name dated 1849 at the head of the title page. An interesting early text from Bohn's Antiquarian Library.

London: Longman, Rivingtons et al., 1847. 8 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A very good looking Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. Twin gilt and a blind fillet frame the splendid blind device on the boards. Portrait. There is a neat ink inscription, dated 1853 on the first blank. There are some minor scratches, nibblings of a long defunct insect and a couple of small splits not affecting the integrity of the binding. This edition 'Accurately printed from the Text of the Corrected Copies Left by the Late George Steevens, Esq., and Edmond Malone, Esq.,.... (with) a history of the Stage, & A Life of Shakspeare; by Alexander Chalmers'.

London: John Murray, 1835. 2 volume set, 8 1/2" tall. A very fine early Victorian full diced calf, with wide gilt raised bands, twin labels and splendid extra gilt panels. A single gilt fillet and blind corner tools frame the boards. Embellished with portrait, 2 engraved title pages and 38 engraved plates. A fine edition with notes by Treadway Russel Nash.

London: Strahan and Co., 1870. 10 volume set, 5 1/4" . An usually heavy sumptuous morocco binding with gilt raised bands and gilt and onlayed calf tooling. With dentelles and all edges gilt . The text is decorated with initials and headings. A really lovely little set.

London: John Murray, 1825. 2 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. An elegant set in a Georgian full calf with gilt bands, twin labels and elaborate gilt tooling to the panels. With the armorial bookplate of Robert Williams, from the recently dispersed library of a Dorset Country House. Portrait. Slight rubbing and light foxing to the portrait, overall a lovely copy of this scarce edition in English.

London: Wm. S. Orr and Co., (1849). 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. An exceptionally fine full calf binding by Bradstreet's with gilt raised bands, twin labels and extra gilt panels. Gilt dentelles and top edges. With superb comic engravings by Phiz throughout. With the original paper wraps bound in. A splendid copy of the first edition by Charles Lever, considered the 'Irish Dickens' in his day and illustrated by the artist most famed for his illustrations to the works of Charles Dickens.

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1820. 2 volume set, 10 inches tall. An impressive early Victorian full hard grain morocco binding by the great firm of Wright. With raised bands, gilt pallets and twin gilt fillets framing the boards. The initials J.R. are on the tail of both spines. All edges gilt. Embellished with 2 engraved vignettes on the title pages and 20 full page engravings, as called for, by Thomas Stothard. A little foxing to several plates, overall in pristine condition. A very handsome set of Defoe's early 18th century tale, which remains one of the most popular adventures ever written.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1875 & 1877. 10 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A very handsome Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and finely gilt panels around a pomegranate centre tool. A splendid set of the Works complete in 8 volumes and the Life complete in 2 volumes. There is some minor rubbing and the engraved frontispiece of the Life is offset, otherwise a clean and pristine set of this great history.

London: J. Johnson, 1798. 2 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. Very pretty little 18th century tree calf bindings with gilt bands on a smooth back, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. With a neat ink previous owner's name "Mary Anne Watten (?) November 1825". Embellish with engravings by Stothard. A firm and clean set of these once hugely popular and influential poems.

A stunning dark pink hard grain morocco binding with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and magnificent gilt tooling to the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Book plate. Illustrated throughout. A fine set of this classic work by the Dublin born art historian, Mrs. Jameson.

Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1826. 8 volume set, 9 inches tall. A superb, if slightly faded, full William IV hard grain morocco with raised bands, gilt titles, dentelles and all edges. With the armorial bookplate of Laurence Currie. Slight rubbing but a very handsome and clean set of Clarendon's great 'History of the Rebellion'.

London: Richard Bentley, 1891. 9 volume set, 9 inches tall. A handsome Victorian half calf by Bickers with gilt raised bands, twin labels, ornate gilt centre tools and gilt edges.With the striking bookplate of Dorothy Moulton Mayer. Illustrated with frontispieces, a vignette on the title pages and engraved portraits. Horatio Walpole the 4th Earl of Orford, creator of the Gothic masterpiece Strawberry Hill House, wrote 'The Castle of Otranto', considered the first Gothic novel. Slightly rubbed but a good looking set.

Edinburgh: William Paterson, 1879. 3 volume set, 8 inches tall. A neat crushed morocco by Ramage with gilt raised bands and neat gilt floral tooling to the panels. Gilt top edges. From a limited edition of 485 copies. Sir David Lyndsay was a 16th century knight and herald whose poetry is still celebrated today.

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1854. 3 volume set, 6 3/4 inches tall. A classic Victorian full calf binding by the great firm of Hayday with gilt raised bands, twin labels and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. Armorial bookplate. Sir James Mackintosh was a politician and liberal philosopher most remembered for his views on the French Revolution.

London: John Murray, 1901. 2 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A beautiful Edwardian full calf binding from the library of Alfred de Rothschild, but without his bookplate. With gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt and blind fillets frame the boards. Foxing to the preliminaries, then pristine. Illustrated throughout. The notorious Lady Sarah Lennox was 'Daughter of Charles, 2nd Duke of Richmond, and successively the Wife of Sir Thomas Charles Bunbury, Bart,; and of the Hon: George Napier'. The work also includes 'a short political sketch of the years 1760 to 1763 by Henry Fox, 1st Lord Holland'. A favorite of both King George II and King George III she led a remarkable and scandalous life.

London: G. Bell and Sons, 1910. 2 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A classic Edwardian full calf binding by Spottiswoode with gilt raised bands, twin labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. The tree calf boards have a gilt armorial block and a gilt fillet border. Embellished with 25 maps and plans. A handsome copy of this life of Napoleon Buonaparte.

London & Glasgow: Blackie and Son, 1840. 5 volume set, 6 1/2 inches tall. A very attractive little set in early Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and smart gilt tooled panels. Fine gilt and blind tooling decorate the boards. All edges gilt. Engraved frontispieces and title pages. Popular poet in his day much admired by his peers including Sir Walter Scott. He came from a humble background working as a shepherd, before achieving success as a poet in both English and Scottish.

London: Edward Moxon, 1849. 7 volume set, 7 inches tall. A very pretty Victorian full calf binding by Zaehnsdorf with floral gilt tooling and a green shield label on a smooth back. A single gilt fillet frames the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. Portrait. The spines are slightly darkened and rubbed but overall a fine little set of the poetical works of one of the greatest English romantic poets.
