Twin gilt and a blind fillet frame the splendid blind device on the boards. Portrait. There is a neat ink inscription, dated 1853 on the first blank. There are some minor scratches, nibblings of a long defunct insect and a couple of small splits not affecting the integrity of the binding. With raised bands, gilt pallets and twin gilt fillets framing the boards. The initials J.R. are on the tail of both spines. All edges gilt. Embellished with 2 engraved vignettes on the title pages and 20 full page engravings, as called for, by Thomas Stothard. A little foxing to several plates, overall in pristine condition. A very handsome set of Defoe's early 18th century tale, which remains one of the most popular adventures ever written.

The notorious Lady Sarah Lennox was 'Daughter of Charles, 2nd Duke of Richmond, and successively the Wife of Sir Thomas Charles Bunbury, Bart,; and of the Hon: George Napier'. The work also includes 'a short political sketch of the years 1760 to 1763 by Henry Fox, 1st Lord Holland'. A favorite of both King George II and King George III she led a remarkable and scandalous life.
