Edinburgh: Robert Cadell, 1834. 3 volume set, 6 inches tall. An extraordinary full hard grain morocco with unusual gilt tooling to the smooth back and flamboyant gilt tooling to the boards. All edges gilt. Third Series. Slight foxing to the 3 frontispieces, otherwise clean. Fading to the spines, especially to the first volume. An ink inscription first blank reading: 'H.J. Coleridge from H.G. Hulse Eton. May 1841.' Followed in pencil by: 'Died at Messina June 1. 1851 and a Latin quotation.

London: Davies, 1775. 3 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. A very good looking 18th century full calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and elaborate gilt tooling to the panels. A single gilt fillet frames the boards, With bookplate of Ellen James. A little rubbing but overall a perfectly firm and solid set of this scarce English language edition.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1884. 4 volume set, 8 3/4 inches tall. A most elegant set in half straight grain morocco with wide gilt bands, ornate centre tools within gilt framed panels. Gilt top edges. A celebrated history of the first 4 king Georges from the library of Alfred de Rothschild.

London: Bumpus, 1818. 4 volume set, 7 1/2 inches tall. Elegant half morocco with gilt raised bands, delicate gilt centre tools in the panels. Fine engraved title page. From the library of Alfred de Rothschild, and with his bookplate. An interesting Regency edition in excellent condition.

Glasgow: Robert & Andrew Foulis, 1771-1772. 4 volume set, 5 inches tall. A Charming set in 18th century calf, in excellent condition with raised bands, gilt fillets and fine labels. Pink speckled edges. A slight nick to the head cap of the first volume and scuffs to a couple raised bands, overall a fine set. The first 2 volumes contain Paradise Lost, the remaining titles are found in the second 2 volumes.

London: Saunders and Otley, 1836, 1837 & 1838. 3 volumes, 8 3/4 inches tall. A striking full morocco set bound by MORRELL with gilt raised bands and fine gilt tooling to the panels. Two gilt fillets frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. Embellished with superb engraved vignettes throughout. Some foxing on the slightly brittle paper but still a fine set of these annual anthologies of British verse throughout the centuries.

London: Henry Colburn & Co., 1849. 3 volume set, 9 inches tall. An unusual and very elegant half crushed morocco with three raised gilt bands and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt top edges. The Sun King, Louis XIV, was king of France from 1643 until his death in 1715, the longest reign of any sovereign at 72 years and 110 days. Miss Julia Pardoe was an English poet, novelist, historian and traveller. Her most enduring works are her French histories which continued to be printed into the twentieth century.

Edinburgh: Mitchel, Williams & Smith, 1807. 8 volume set, 5 3/4 inches tall. A splendid little set bound in a Regency full 'malachite' calf with gilt bands, contrasting red labels and delicate gilt tooling to the panels. Thee are some creased pages, many folded corners and a couple of scuffs but it is still a delightful little set of Plutarch, the great first century Greek biographer.

Lipsiae (Liepzig), Sumptibus librariae Hahnianae, 1845. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A handsome and charming binding by Budden of Cambridge with the title labels reading out the author's name. With gilt raised bands, delicate floral gilt tooling to the panels and twin labels. There is a degree of rubbing and scuffing to the shoulders and some foxing but still a solid great looking set. This is the complete section on Aristophanes from a much larger set of ancient Greek poetic works. Included are some the earliest and greatest works of comedy or 'Old Comedy', including 'The Clouds', 'The Wasps', 'The Birds', 'The Frogs' and Lysistra.' In the original Greek.

London: Hurst, Robinson, and Co., 1822. 4 volume set, 6 3/4 inches tall. A very attractive Georgian full calf bound set with wide gilt raised bands, twin labels and ornate gilt tooling to the panels. Gilt and blind fillets frame the boards. With the celebrated engravings by Robert Smirke. There is a neat ink inscription on the first blank. Some foxing to the plates, otherwise a perfectly clean set of this hugely popular 18th century French novel, here translated into English.

London: John Murray, 1823. 5 volume set, 8.5 inches tall. An elegant binding in pristine condition. With gilt raised bands, title and very fine gilt panels. Armorial bookplates. A most attractive set of these hugely successful and influential poems.

Maestricht: Dufour & Philippe, 1778. 9 volume set, 7 inches tall. Full 18th century cat's paw calf with gilt bands, twin labels and a delightful gilt floral centre tool to the panels. Pink edges. Unusual green speckled endpapers. Bookplate. There are 2 small but nasty dents to the spines of volumes III and VIII, otherwise a very neat and clean set of this scarce collection. In the original French.

London: Longman et al., 1816. 4 volume set, 7 1/4 inches tall. Full contemporary vellum binding with twin labels and extra gilt tooling to the spine. The binding is soiled and marked but retains its shape and has no splitting. The volume label for volume I has slight loss. This edition, the 7th, LACKS the copper plates, which were never bound in. 'The Mysteries of Udolpho' is a quintessential Gothic romance containing as it does, all the necessary ingredients: remote crumbling castles, seemingly supernatural events, a brooding, scheming villain and a persecuted heroine.

London: Richardson et al.,1806. 2 volume set, 9 1/2 inches tall. A most attractive full Regency full straight grain morocco with a smooth back, gilt bands and fine gilt tooling typical of the style of the day. The boards are framed by gilt and blind rolls. All edges gilt. The armorial bookplate of Lord Kinnaird of Rossie Priory, Perth. Engraved plates. Some foxing, especially to the plates a couple of ancient ink stains to the boards, otherwise a fine set.

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1849. 2 volume set, 10 inches tall. A smart early Victorian full calf with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and twin labels. Twin gilt and a blind fillet frame the boards. Some bumps and scratches but an impressive set. Neat ink inscription on the first blank. Colour title in volume 1. Slight foxing. Illustrations throughout the text. John Froissart was a French speaking medieval chronicler who expressed the chivalric revival of the 14th century and is an important source for the first half of the Hundred Years War.

London: Richard Bentley, 1838. 4 volume set, 9 inches tall. A very good looking full Victorian calf with gilt raised bands, twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. Twin gilt fillets and corner tools frame the boards. Gilt dentelles and top edges. With the bookplate of Charles B. Cochran, the English theatrical producer. Embellished with 16 engraved plates, many folding. The life and career of Charles Mathews, celebrated English theatre manager and comic actor in theatre and entertainment in the 18th and 19th centuries.

London: Routeledge, Warne, and Routledge, 1862. 2 volume set, 9 1/2 inches tall. A rather magnificent full morocco with gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels and superb ornate gilt tooling around a heraldic crest to the boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Double column. Engraved portrait of Shakespeare, engraved title page, full page engravings of scenes from Shakespeare's Plays and 45 full page extra illustrated engravings of Shakespeare's heroines. Some rubbing to the binding, loss of both free end papers and slight foxing to the tissues and portraits but still an impressive set.

London: John Murray, 1854. 4 volume set, 8 1/2 inches tall. A classic Victorian full calf by the great firm of Hayday & Mansell, with gilt raised bands, twin labels and elaborate gilt tooling to the panels. Twin gilt fillets, a blind fillet and rose corner tools frame the boards. 4 engraved title pages. There is a neat ink inscription 'on leaving Eton, July 1862' on the first blank. A minor stain runs along the foredge of the plates. A handsome set of the works of Oliver Goldsmith, the great Anglo-Irish novelist, naturalist and poet.

London: Richard Bentley, 1866. 2 volume set, 8 inches tall. A neat half calf for Hatchards of Piccadilly with gilt raised bands, gilt framed panels and top edges. A most entertaining account of eccentrics embellished with 90 interesting portraits indicative of behaviour or appearance outside the expected. From the Library of the Late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey. An excellent set in fine condition.

A most attractive half morocco binding by Harrison with gilt raised bands, titles, fine and delicate gilt tooling to the panels with onlays and gilt top edges.
