Paris: Migneret, 1801 ( AN IX ). 4 volumes, 8 inches tall. A fine very early 19th century mottled half calf binding with a double label, simple gilt centre tools and gilt bands. The curved calf corners are striking. Speckled yellow boards. Pale yellow edges. With the bookplate of the Chateau de Cirey in each volume.

Amsterdam: R. & G. Wetstein, 1712. 2 volume set, 5.25 inches tall. A superb little set in an early 18th century half calf with raised bands, twin labels and gilt floral centre tools. Pink edges. The work is in 12 parts, each having an engraved plate, some with slightly frayed fore edges. There is an extremely faint trace of an owner's stamp on the title page. This great parody of the Aeneid was written by the extraordinary Paul Scarron, first husband of Madame Maintenon, future wife of Louis XIV.

Paris: Belin, 1794. 3 volume set, 6.5 inches tall. Full mottled calf with raised bands, twin labels and gilt filets. Slight worming affecting the first few leaves in the bottom corner of volume one, otherwise a fine copy in a completely pristine binding.

Paris: Truttel et Würtz, 1801. 2 volumes, 8.25 inches tall. A beautiful tree calf with gilt bands and labels. Blue speckled edges. Folding portraits. The armorial bookplate of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo. A further 6 volumes were published.

Lyon: B. Cormon et Blanc, Reymann, An VIII, 1800. 2 vols., 8vo (8.25 x 5.25 inches). Superb contemporary full tree calf, twin red and green labels, very pretty tooling to spine and framing boards, marbled edges and endpapers. Slightly rubbed. Signed by the author in black ink to verso of half-title. An excellent binding.

Paris: Chez La V Duchesne et al, 1770. 3 vol set, 6.5 inches tall. A most attractive 18th century quarter binding with gilt raised bands, calf and inked labels, fine floral gilt tooling to the panels.

Paris: Ledoux et Tenre, 1817. 2 volume set, 5.5 inches tall. Charming quarter speckled calf with treecalfed paper on the boards cleverly imitating calf. Twin labels and fine gilt tooling to the panels. A pretty little set.

Paris: (vols. 1& 2 H. Fournier; vols. 3 & 4 Firmin Didot for) Ambroise Dupont et Roret, Urbain Canel, 1825. 4 volume set, 7 inches tall. Quarter calf with twin labels and gilt centre tools. Second French edition of The Trials of Margaret Lyndsay (1823), the first French edition being 1823 (both editions very rare). Issued anonymously in English, the novel was is attributed by its French editors to Scots poet Allan Cunningham and presented with a biographical preface. It is in fact by fellow Scot John Wilson, better known as the pre-eminent contributors (with Blackwood and Hogg) to Blackwood’s Magazine (he is credited with over 500 contributions between 1817 and 1854). OCLC lists 2 copies only of each French edition: 1823 (Bn and University of Lille); 1825 (NLS and Lyon)

Quarter calf with twin labels and gilt centre tools.Waverley first appeared in French in 1818, before Scott attained celebrity in France and therefore now very rare. This reprint is for the first of Gosselin’s collected Oeuvres complètes.
